I’m home by my mom today and decided to go downstairs and watch some tv.

The ceiling fan is off balance and makes noise. If you’ve been following me for a while you’ll know that noise really irritates me.

I cleaned the blades and stuck a coin on two of them and after some trial and error got it balanced again so it’s nice and quiet now.

I feel like so victorious.

Now I can watch Vikings in peace.

Brain studies find that concern for justice and equality is linked to logic, not emotion.

By Lisa Wade, PhD

A new study finds that people with high “justice sensitivity” are using logic, not emotions.  Subjects were put in a fMRI machine, one that measures ongoing brain activity and shown videos of people acting kindly or cruelly toward a homeless person.

Some respondents reacted more strongly than others — hence the high versus low justice sensitivity — and an analysis of the high sensitivity individuals’ brain activity showed that they were processing the images in the parts of the brain where logic and rationality live.   “Individuals who are sensitive to justice and fairness do not seem to be emotionally driven,” explained one of the scientists, “Rather, they are cognitively driven.”

Activists aren’t angry, they reasonably object to unjust circumstances that they understand all too well.

Image borrowed from Jamie Keiles at Teenagerie, who is a high sensitivity individual.

When people find out that I can speak Spanish, one of the weird reactions I get is them (just men of course) asking me if I speak Spanish during sex.

First of all… what the fuck kind of fucking question is that?

Second of all, why on earth would I ever express myself in Spanish in bed? What do people even SAY during sex in Spanish? I have no idea. I don’t know the jargon quite frankly. How do you tell someone you’re about to come? No idea. My god think of the accidents that could occur.

Anyway it got me wondering about people who speak more than one language, which one they use in bed. If they have a preference, if they use both or switch back and forth, if it depends on the language of the partner, if one language is more sexy than another… Like, where does your sex-brain go linguistically?

These are the things I think about at night while Chris is asleep.

Hey you northerners did you have to learn squaredancing in elementary school

as a person who did elementary in new jersey and connecticut we had to learn various dances that werent exactly square dancing but they were group dances where we grabbed each other by the elbow and spun which is Kind Of Square Dancing

I grew up in Alaska, and learned square dancing in elementary school PE class.

North Dakota – middle school PE included square, line, and ballroom dancing.

I learned square dancing in my elementary school music class. I think around 4th grade.

Gym class for every year in elementary school. In 5th grade, we put on a show. My dance partner was my “boyfriend,” who broke up with me a few days before the show. I was bitter and made faces at him the entire time in front of all of the parents. I dated him again for a while in middle school and we went to our 8th grade formal dance together. And now he’s in a semi-famous band. /coolstorybro

Square dancing weeks were always full of draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaama.

Yep. Square dancing in elementary pe in Ohio…

In high school on the IL side of the STL metro. We had no clue and thus tons of fun.

Florida, late 80′s early 90′s.

Minnesota, middle school, late 90s. We had a little bit of square dancing and waltzing, but we spent most of our time learning tinikiling, which was super fun and way less cootie-transmitting.

Chicago suburb – middle school. Both Square and Line Dancing. My partner in square dancing was the most popular boy in school and I absolutely hated him.

YES. northern Vermont in the late 80s, and we did it every year through 6th grade. However! My brother is 10 years younger than I am, and he didn’t have to do it at all. In fact, he was completely incredulous that that was a thing I had to do.

Elementary school in Denver CO in the 70s and yes indeed…square dancing

went to private school for most of elementary, but in middle and high school in Southern California we did a lot of country line dancing. I can still remember most of Elvira, and a few steps of the boot scoot boogie.

Born and raised in various places in Georgia, never learned square dancing, line dancing, can’t recall a single type of dancing that I learned in school.

Yep! Western and central Illinois elementary and Jr. High in the 70s and very early 80s – may pole, square, ballroom and “social” (jitterbug, foxtrot, etc.). My sons did the same in middle school in the early to mid 2000s.

I grew up in Venezuela and we STILL had to learn square dancing in middle school in the late 80’s. They also taught us salsa and merengue however.

I was just wondering, before Native American, before Indians, what did they call themselves? Was there even a collective term? Probably not cause they were the only people around and they identified by tribe most likely. I mean, I was just thinking cause I’ve heard them refer to themselves as Indians even after Native American became the PC term and so I was wondering when whoever decided to change the name, like did they ever even ask them?

Cramps and day 4 of this on-again off-again migraine.

If it wasn’t so invasive I’d just have my uterus removed. It’s not like I intend to use it.

Dad

I got an email from one of my dad’s colleagues today.

He told me they’ve planned a lecture series in his honor for later this year.

They’re also planning on creating a website where all his publications can be available.

I’ve probably never explained what he did, but my dad worked in the field of international trade and economic policy negotiation.

So what that means is that he worked with governments and/or international organizations like the UN and the WTO etc. to negotiate and draft trade agreements or economic policy between countries or regions of specific parts of the world.

He travelled a LOT for his job. He also met a lot of really fascinating people. But I knew very little about what he really did and to date have never read any of his publications. I know he contributed a lot to the Caribbean region in terms of policy but the truth is, his work was something distant to me that I wasn’t interested in. He resented the fact that we didn’t take an interest but we also never saw him because of it so we wanted work as far as possible when he was home.

I hope that with access to his publications I will gain a greater appreciation for his life’s work. I know he is spoken of very highly among his colleagues and he was considered to have made great contributions in his field. I think it’s time to get to know the professional side of my father. I resented it all my life but it’s time to put that behind me.

  • I really like those rings I made today. I want to make a series like those. My mind has been churning today with new ideas.
  • I feel emotionally fatigued with this issue with our mayor. That protest I was supposed to go to but couldn’t yielded results. He declared his intention to resign. But today at the emergency council meeting he didn’t and there’s been no statement issued since then. So not only is our mayor a sexist troglodyte, he’s also a man who doesn’t keep his word. Honestly I really didn’t expect that he would, that’s the worst part. I didn’t even believe him. That’s so fucking sad.
  • I’ve been trying to stay out of commenting on the U.S. elections. Honestly though it’s such a shit show. Y’all are looking so bad on the world stage. No let me amend that, your potential leaders are. We know that many of you are better than that. But truthfully, Trump has revealed a really nasty underbelly of America. But then Black folk been tryna tell everybody about it for a long time. And people still ain’t listening.
  • I just found out that Vanity died. I feel like a piece of my adolescence just died with her. I was a Prince fiend. RIP girl.

I finished my lookbook and sent it off. I actually quite like it. Considering I didn’t have any idea what I wanted to do when I started I’m quite surprised that it turned out as well as it did. Then again that’s how all my design jobs go. Maybe some day I’ll actually believe I’m a real designer.

I got a call today from someone asking to speak to (let’s say my last name is Smith) Mr. Smith. I was immediately confused. You want to talk to my dead father? Then she said Or Mrs. Smith. So I said I was their daughter. So she went on for a while and then I realised she was calling about my spa appointment that Chris had booked me. Oh! No. He’s Mr. Brown and I’m Mrs. Smith. She was most apologetic. I’m really glad I didn’t tell her my father was dead.

Chris made us a big spread for lunch. I’m gonna bake some chocolate cupcakes. I’m free for the rest of the day. Yesss.

Is this really a Texas thing?

Guilty.

It’s not just Texas.  I was born and raised in Alabama and that’s how I measure.  I live in NH now…..about 40 to 90 minutes north of Boston, depending on traffic.

Virginia too, because distance in miles doesn’t mean shit. I drive 52 miles each way to work and it takes me an hour and five minutes. At my last office, a coworker lived four miles from it and it took him 45 minutes. Traffic is a nightmare or it’s non-existent, so mileage is irrelevant.

IM FROM CONNECTICUT AND IF I CANT GET SOMEWHERE UNDER 30 MINUTES IM NOT GOING

Rhode Island is too small to measure in miles. We also go by minutes/hours. Although, it barely takes an hour to get from one end of the state to the other so we mostly just go in minutes.

I live in Cali and whenever someone asks me how far away work is, I always give it to them in minutes.

I do it too

I just realised that I’ve literally never heard anyone give directions in distance.

House Hunters is in Paris and I am so jealous right now.

Also I had to type that sentence like five times because apparently my thumb is not working properly.

Ok I’m about ¾ of the way through this lookbook thing. I figured out how to create hyperlinks so that when you click on the picture it will take you directly to the website. I’m not planning on printing it so that’ll suffice.

I’m tired but I got a lot of work done so I’m gonna take a rest now.

Next time I’d like a little more notice.

Then again next time I should probably have one prepared anyway.

Steups.

things and stuffs

  • I spent the morning doing photography for this lookbook thing. I hope my efforts haven’t been in vain.
  • My back now hurts so I’m happy that for the rest of my day I’ll be working from the bed streaming some crap on netflix and doing layouts
  • Living in this world as a woman as exhausting. Living in this world as a woman of colour is at least double that. Sometimes I am so fatigued by dealing with sexism, racism, privilege, cluelessness, tone deaf people, bigotry, ignorance, and the fundamental lack of support in this world for women at large. And I am STILL privileged, that’s the thing that fucks me up. I still have it so much better than SO many women and girls on this planet. They’re not even in a position to push back or speak up. This whole system is just so fucked UP. I’m so tired of dealing with it all.
  • Amma sit here and eat my hand and cheese croissant with the baby spinach and tomatoes and that nice honey mustard I like and enjoy my lunch and try not to get riled up for five minutes today. I don’t think I’m gonna succeed but amma try.
  • Lawd gave me a fighting spirit and I’m glad for it but sometimes I need a rest.

What are some things you’ve learned / found about being self employed that you didn’t expect?

Well I’ve been self employed before back when I used to freelance. I did that for a good five years or so before going back to an office job so I’ll draw on that part of the experience.

People tend to romanticize self employment and it definitely has it’s perks. No boss. Work from wherever. Wear pajamas all day. Set your own schedule. Great.

Stuff that I didn’t know going into self employment?

You never stop worrying about money. Unless you have a regular source of work you’re always worried about the next job/sale. It’s a constant hustle. The anxiety has never left me.

You have to be your own PR person. You gotta sell yourself, constantly. And I really hate that part of things and it makes me very uncomfortable still but you have to do it. Or get an agent.

You work a lot harder. Part of it is self motivated because you love what you’re doing and part is because you don’t have anyone else to do stuff that other people would take care of like bills and deliveries and so on.

It’s really hard to make plans financially when your income is unsteady. When you see big chunks of money at a time you can go a little wild. I’ve been pretty irresponsible with money in the past because I had a sort of easy come easy go attitude but I’m now in a more responsible sort of mindset.

You have to be VERY DISCIPLINED when you are self employed. You have to make sure to keep regular work hours (this is also important because it’s good to separate work time and play time) and meet your deadlines and just plain be professional man. Lots of people fuck up in this area. I somehow never did, mostly because my reputation was on the line and I don’t fuck with that.

You tend to get kind of hermit-ish. I mean, it might be me? But most people I know who are self employed don’t get out much. I mostly leave home to force myself to socialize and I always feel better when I do. But you can very easily get into a rut and just stay there. I’ve clocked myself at not leaving the house for close to three weeks.

You get spoilt. I don’t know that I could EVER go back to working a 9-5 job. I just don’t have the stamina for it. There are days I work six hours. There are days I work twelve hours. Some days it’s only three hours. It varies. But a) it never feels like work because I love it and I’m doing it for me and b) I tailor my hours and activities on a daily basis so that I’m always interested and never worn down by too much of one thing.

I’ve done some freelancing in the past couple of years and it’s exhausting to me to work a 9-5 day. I get bored, the time drags, my body hurts from sitting in one position all day. It just sucks. I can’t do it and I don’t know how I ever did.

I think those were the biggest things I discovered when I first became self employed. This time around it’s been easier in some ways because I was better prepared. But it’s still a different ballgame so I’m learning a LOT, especially on the business end of things.

Ok you can do it. You’re a graphic designer. You just have to relearn InDesign as usual, retouch your photos, take some new pictures, and you’ll be gold.

I’m going to be celebrating Valentine’s Day this year for the first time in a really long time. Not because it means so much to me. But because I can. It was the day my dad passed. It’s not something I make a big deal out of, its whatever, but it’s kind of a hard day for me still, so the fact that I’m even trying to celebrate something is a good thing for me. I’ll probably go back to ignoring it again next year.

Now I have Depeche Mode running through my head.

Policy of Truth specifically.

I am not complaining

Thanks @everydayjewels

One of these days when I can afford to hire some models for my line, this is what I want them to look like.

You, like me, are very proud of your culture. Did you have a strong family influence growing up? Or did you acquire it later when you could better appreciate it?

It was always there. I think it’s a little different for you because you live in a country with a lot of different cultures and yours (Polish right?) would have been something learnt through family and perhaps community.

Trinidadian culture is found in all families here. While we have different origins (African, East Indian, Chinese, European, Arabic) and within that we may have separate religious or cultural customs, as a whole our culture is unified so it’s everywhere.

That said, because I left Trinidad as a child, most of my exposure DID come through from my family. My nuclear family when abroad and my extended family when I would visit. I lost a lot of my connection to my culture over the years and only recovered it when I was in college and made friends with a group of Trinis who reconnected me to my Trinidadian-ness.

Thanks for the question LRG!

protest

My entire country is up in arms over the victim-blaming statements of the mayor of Port of Spain.

That girl I wrote about yesterday that they found dead? She was a Japanese tourist who played pan and would come down to Trinidad every year to participate in Carnival.

Cause of death is undetermined but the mayor made a statement essentially saying that women must be responsible for not being victims of abuse.

I am ashamed and embarrassed that someone in public office in Trinidad could hold such a point of view, far less to speak it out loud. I feel so horribly for the family of this girl who loved our culture so much only to meet her death on the island. How incredibly insensitive. I am so ashamed.

I am not usually one to get out there and march, but tomorrow I will brave the hot sun and meet my fellow countrymen and women in protest and demand the resignation of this sexist bigot.

It really annoys the fuck out of me when people call them steel drums.

Steel pan. We invented them, we named them, it’s steel pan. STEEL PAN. It’s a collective noun too.

They found the body of a female masquerader in the Savannah.

They suspect she may be a tourist.

But how the hell has no one reported her missing? People do not come down to Trinidad to play mas alone. Where are her people? When did they notice she was missing and why haven’t they gone to the police?

In all my years here I’ve never heard of anything like this.

  • Doing business (or anything) in Port of Spain on an Ash Wednesday is a real pleasure. Roads were clear, no lines. If only it could be like this every day.
  • I got some new milk for my cheesemaking. This one is not ultra-pasteurised so hopefully I’ll get some good curds out of it.
  • Yes I now know what “eating her curds and whey” means. I don’t know why anyone would want to but yeah.
  • I’m glad Carnival is over. It’s a relief to get out of the madness of that energy. Maybe next year we can fly out.
  • I met one of Chris’s cousins who’s also named Natasha. She lives in Spain. We really wanna visit and she’d really like us to come.
  • I’m hungry. Roast chicken and pesto potatoes a la orden.

Why is it I always think I look pretty when I’m at home then I go out and I’m like yuck? Is my mirror at home especially friendly? Do all other mirrors hate me? What is going on

The room, available on AirBnB, includes all the details of the original painting, arranged in haphazard alignment to imitate the original room.

Van Gogh’s Bedrooms” features approximately 36 works by the artist and will run through May 10, 2016. via

Gillos

On Saturday we went to visit Chris’s godparents. I’d never met them before but they were good friends of both our parents. His godfather was a teacher with our dads back in the 60’s. Their limes and parties were legendary.

They told us about a night when they were all liming at Hilton poolside. They were loud and rowdy as usual so management sent a waiter to speak to them.

As the story goes, they did not welcome the intervention and the waiter soon found himself at the bottom of the swimming pool.

On observation, my father decided he wasn’t comfortable enough and tossed a chair in after him.

Naturally they were all asked to leave which they did with glee.

Your replies are on the way, Tumblr

Just wanted to let you know that we’re putting the finishing touches on replies, and making sure they play nicely with everything else on this platform.

“Why did they go away? Why, staff, whyyyy?” Fair question. We had a gaggle of overlapping message-like systems—namely, asks, fan mail, reblogging with commentary, question posts (rare!), and, yes, replies. When we finally introduced actual instant messaging a couple months ago, we had a lot of untangling to do.

In order to make all these systems work together, we had to do some back-end retooling, which meant taking down replies for a bit. For longer than we expected. Sorry about that.

And we get it—replies fill a very particular need (and you were very clear about expressing that need). They’re a kind of super like. A way to fully express your feelings about a thing without expecting anything in response. A gift.

When they come back, they’ll be even better. People will be able to reply to your posts multiple times, and you’ll even be able to reply to your own posts. Simple changes, yes, but ones that open up lots of possibilities.

Best of all, we’ve laid the down the engineering and design groundwork for even more substantial improvements down the road. Replies will be able to develop side-by-side with messaging.

More to come, soon enough. We know you all miss replies. We hope you enjoy their imminent return.

Let’s start, this time, with a story. This is about Hillary Clinton – everything I write seems to be about her these days – but it’s about me, too. It’s about what it means, to be a feminist, or a woman on the left, and whether it matters. So before I get to her, let’s give you a good look at me.

I’m at a job interview. It seems like I actually have a shot at this one. Someone who likes me knows the boss here, and has talked me up to him in person. I can show him my most recent performance review, in which I’m described as “a joy to work with,” that “my editors fight over who gets to edit my pieces,” and where the “places for improvement” section mentions they actually have to “wrack their brains for something I could do better.” I’ve come prepared to talk about my strong, built-in reader base, which I built from the ground up; the fact that I’ve led several social media campaigns that received national or international press attention and raised substantial funds, one of which was enthusiastically endorsed by several pro-choice members of Congress; my award for social media activism, from a prestigious women’s media organization, which I won by popular vote; the fact that I wind up at or near the top of my magazine’s “most-read” traffic list every time I publish a new piece.

I can mention other things, basic work-ethic things. I can mention that I have not voluntarily taken a vacation day or a sick day for the past 18 months, and that the last sick day I took was only because I was hospitalized. (I do have to take the day off on federal holidays, but on those days, I usually write for fun.) I can mention that I have never been late filing a piece. I can mention that the copy comes in clean, doesn’t require much editing, and gets turned around quickly, with maximum co-operation. I can talk about all that, at my job interview. Those are the questions I’m prepared to answer.

I’m not prepared for the question they ask.

“We’re a progressive site,” the man across the table begins, “And our readership, as with most progressive sites, is mostly men. You’ve focused a lot on women’s issues. Would you be comfortable writing something that men would be able to read?”

Wow. This is brilliant in so many ways.

My little brother – He’s 9, in the 4th grade and working on a really neat sciencegeography project for school.

Part of the information he needs is peoples’ heights and the state/region they’re from. He’s already asked our entire family, a few neighbors, favorite teachers, and a lot of friends.. but his graphs don’t have a lot of diversity since we all live in p much the same area.

Want to help a wicked cool kid out? 😊

No, I have not seen Groundhog Day

Because I do like like Bill Murray.

Go ahead and hit me. See if I care.

Men have this weird obsession with this movie. But all but a large number of them love it. Along with Hitch. I think I need to watch both with a man to find out why.

I’m kinda obsessed with it too actually. I never knew it was a guy thing. It’s just really funny, and irreverent and different. Get on it! Also Hitch is fun but no where near the caliber of Groundhog Day.

you know that thing where someone responds to one of your posts by reblogging it and you want to show them you saw their response so you heart it but because it’s a reblog you end up hearting your own post and you look like an egocentric asshole?

this is why we need replies
