My entire country is up in arms over the victim-blaming statements of the mayor of Port of Spain.

That girl I wrote about yesterday that they found dead? She was a Japanese tourist who played pan and would come down to Trinidad every year to participate in Carnival.

Cause of death is undetermined but the mayor made a statement essentially saying that women must be responsible for not being victims of abuse.

I am ashamed and embarrassed that someone in public office in Trinidad could hold such a point of view, far less to speak it out loud. I feel so horribly for the family of this girl who loved our culture so much only to meet her death on the island. How incredibly insensitive. I am so ashamed.

I am not usually one to get out there and march, but tomorrow I will brave the hot sun and meet my fellow countrymen and women in protest and demand the resignation of this sexist bigot.
