Its pretty incredible how accurate the science of astrophysics has gotten. New Horizons actually arrived 72 seconds early after travelling for almost 10 years straight to its destination.
Hello! The person who calculated the arrival time of New Horizons was Yanping Guo, mission design leader and one of the women who made up 25% of the New Horizons team. She configured the entire mission trajectory, including Jupiter and Pluto flybys.
Women’s contribution to the sciences has a long history of being erased, so let’s not forget the women who made New Horizons possible!

Back in the 60’s our dads were both teachers at a high school here in Trinidad, along with a bunch of other men who are all my “uncles” that I love to death.
They became fast friends and then they met and married our respective mothers who had us down the line.
I don’t remember when we met because I guess we were too young. But I do remember even as a child being very drawn to him.
Anyway he was my first boyfriend, I was his first girlfriend, we dated long distance for seven years and broke up in our early twenties and went our separate ways.
His dad passed in December 2012 and I went to the funeral and we saw each other and spoke for the first time in probably more than a decade.
Then my dad passed two months later and he came to his funeral. And then a few months later we casually established contact and the four months after that we were married!
That’s our history in a nutshell lol, thanks for the question!
I got my nose pierced about… Maybe eight or nine years ago? I’m not good at keeping track of stuff like that.
I’ve had various piercings over the years but none that… What’s the term? They’re all devoid of jewelry now and most are closed up or if they’re still open I never put any jewelry in them.
I have a few regular standbys but sometimes I have to be in the right mood to watch them, like The Shawshank Redemption or The Color Purple because they’re long and can be sad in parts.
The one movie I think I’m always in the right mood for is The Fifth Element.
It’s that time of the night where I’m craving some kind of food. Tonight it’s soup. I want something thick and creamy.
It’s not really a craving though I’m genuinely hungry. But we all know I ain’t getting up to make myself anything to eat at this hour of the night. My thighs will thank me tomorrow.
Does anyone else get into those moods where you just want to have a casual one sided convo with tumblr? Like you just kind of want to ramble on about your day and know that someone will read it, but choosing one specific person seems a bit too much effort? And mostly you know you don’t have anything really important to say, but you still just want to “chat” with the internet?
I was watching this show called Finding Your Roots. I’ve always been really fascinated by genealogy but what I’d really like to do is the DNA test that tells you where your distant ancestors come from and what percentages of you have. I mostly know my European ancestry, but want I really to see is how much Mongol blood I have and if we really are Turkish as I’ve been told. One of these days when I have some extra mula I’ll splurge for the kit.
And I baked bread yesterday so I’m sure I could make it happen.
But Chris is all wrapped around me asleep and I don’t feel like getting up. Where are my genie powers when I need them?
Speaking of which, when I lived in Miami I dated a guy whose work elevator was insanely slow to close its doors.
One day I got in with my friend Sally and we were doing the interminable wait when I crossed my arms I Dream Of Jeannie style and held them there, and just at the exact moment when I did the magic nod, the door dinged and slid close.
Sally clapped with delight and I’ve always felt a little bit more magical ever since then.
Me: Te quiero
Chris: What do I want?
Me: Noooo te quiero means I love you
Chris: Ohh
Me: Es como te amo
Chris: What’s my name?
Me: Noooooo! Not te llamo, te amo!
Chris: Oooohhh!
Me: Idiota

This delicate necklace features hand-cut amethyst faceted rondelles strung together to create an ombre effect. It hangs from a dainty gold filled chain and closes with a gold filled lobster clasp.
Amethyst is one of the birthstones of February. It is believed that amethyst is a gemstone which can bring you calmness, inner peace and is thought to highten your natural intuition.
The faceted rondelles are approximately 5-5.5mm in size and span 1.5-2" across.
I think it’s really fucked up that people can be called a “basket case” at a presidential debate. Part of me thinks that’s childish and just a jab. There’s some petty fuckers running for office and the racist xenophobes are out in full force showing their asses. I would even argue that racial tension is regressing to like the Civil Rights Movement. My mom said she is considering retiring moving back to Trinidad if Trump wins.
It’s a scary time for POC in the United States. A friend (from Trinidad who lives in the States) posted on FB today that he has come to the realization that all this time white people have simply tolerated POC because they had to but genuinely either dislike or plain hate us and it’s made him very wary as of late.
I think the thing that I don’t understand is that I know that there are a ton of people who don’t think like Trump supporters but I feel like they’re largely remaining silent? Or is it just me not hearing them speaking out against him? I don’t know. It scares me and I don’t even live there.
This fabulous 17th century armour is composed of 5,840 plates and weighs 118kg, some plates are missing and originally the total number would be 8,439 and weigh 159kg! The tusk swords that accompany this armour (not on display) weigh in at 10kg.
It is the only animal armour of this scale on public display and recently entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest animal armour in the world.
Me: I love you baby
Chris: *half asleep mumbling* I love you too
Me: SAY IT AGAIN! WITH FEELING!
Chris: *laughs* You’re gonna make me wake up
Me: *shines*
“The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (GoRTT) through the Ministry of Public Administration intends to deploy free public wireless Internet service to enable citizens across all strata to access online information and services on the go. The GoRTT wants to establish a brand for this service that is easily and clearly recognizable to all citizens. The Ministry is therefore seeking your assistance to test two potential names and logos for the Wi-Fi service:”
Off the bat I hate all of these logos. Not because the names themselves they have chosen are terrible, but the fact that as a country you are GIVING FREE WIFI TO EVERYONE IN THE ISALND. This is A HUGE DEAL… That being said, they OBVIOUSLY didn’t engage a professional designer to do these. As another blogger pointed out to be offline “they looked like they gave it to the guys at fiverr.com who just did five options and left it there” If you are doing something so revolutionary and huge I think you missed the whole point of your logo.
Firstly, why must EVERY T&T government HAVE to use a hummingbird in its logo? Yes we are the “Land of the Hummingbird” but geez you made the logo look like Caribbean Airlines…
which is not flattering at all because we all know CA service is just as bad as LIAT, so I would stay as far away from the stigma of that when launching a service like that that promises so much!
Secondly, why is Option 3 on the ttwifi section using BRAILLE in the logo? Yes, you heard me, braille. You remember the sign at the airport? Same thing. I am confused by that one.
This questionnaire should of have the “none of the above” option because really GORTT, these need a LOT of work. Just have a gander at this LOTS of good stuff that you can use as inspiration.
Finally as a responsible marketing person you should NEVER post your logos out there for people to vote on unless its part of a bigger promotional plan and so far I don’t see that. I see the GORTT trying to get free work out of people by having the whole population tell THEM what the logo should look like rather than an agency or designer who would advise them. I don’t mind “testing” a brand logo, but that should be done in context and with a control group in a formal setting, you can give 2 shortlisted logos and ASK people their opinion online as to which one they prefer…but thats it.
This really pisses me off, we have the talent, we have the need for investing in local talent, why not use them?Is it that this was a contest and now we are choosing the winner and the losers will not be paid?
What do you think? Am I just being unfair?
I think they’re all awful. They remind me of the TTPost logo. I’m tired of seeing that colour scheme. Plus Braille????? Wtf?
They look like they gave the office secretary to design them. We have so many talented artists who could do ten times better with their eyes closed and one hand tied behind their back. No. Just no.
Oh they just took me into another room and asked me the invasive questions although they really weren’t as invasive as last time. I giggled when she asked me if I’d been in jail in the past year. She wasn’t smiling though. No, no I haven’t Miss.
So they took me into the room to check my vitals to see if I was eligible to donate blood but somehow they didn’t ask me the million and one invasive questions they usually do. What’s up with that?
So one time my mom came to donate blood and they asked about her sexual partners (you cannot have had more than one in the past year) and asked if he (my dad) had had sex with a man to her knowledge. She snickered and said that she couldn’t say for sure but she doubted it.
Then the guy taking her info told her about a woman who had come to donate blood. Her husband was taking a shower and she entered the bathroom unknown to him, just in time to hear him say, “Lawd, I could take a good prick right now!” And that was pretty much how she found out her husband was sleeping with men.
@thefader created an Atlas Of The Underground in our first-ever Global Issue, featuring creatives in Ethiopia, Russia, Brazil, and beyond and your boy the Vikingzilla Bunji Garlin is #3 on that list. Thank you again fader and thank you Vikingnation for riding with me. World awaits
I’m at the blood bank this morning. My uncle is having surgery next month so I came to donate for him. My mom called me yesterday and asked me to and I reminded her that we had collected blood for my father when he had his surgery and he wasn’t able to retrieve all of it. The pints somehow disappeared. It really pissed me off too I made a lot of noise about it at the hospital but they couldn’t locate them.
Truth is that I feel bad that I don’t donate regularly. My blood type is AB- which is the least common blood type and I should donate regularly on that basis alone. But I only tend to do it when somebody needs blood. I know our blood banks are always empty. Which is probably why my father’s reserved pints disappeared. I’m going to start coming here more regularly.

Come one over girl! Omg I would get so fat if I lived near you, your cooking must taste amazing and there’s nothing I love more than my belly. Let’s do eeeeeet!
I made a cachapa with my queso blanco. It’s a pancake made with grated corn and you melt the cheese and fold it in half. Of course it wasn’t a real cachapa (I used Aunt Jemima for god’s sake) but it tasted amazeballs cause I haven’t had one with queso blanco in 24 years. I’m gonna go make another one.
I really got more militant about Blackness after I married Chris. I had always occupied a privileged place of “mixed” or “ethnically ambiguous” (I suppose I still do) but marrying a man who looks Black (he’s also mixed) made a difference to my experience. Make of that what you will
There was absolutely no need to make two more Matrix movies. Curse them.
I used to express a lot more of my thoughts and opinions on here but this culture of going from one to nuclear on people just really turns me off from saying anything. I’ve not been the target of much ire on here but I’m not a thick skinned person and I really couldn’t handle anyone blowing me up over something I expressed. The thing is, I am all for discourse and even debate as long as it’s done respectfully, but people don’t do that do they? They take someone’s comment and make it about themselves and go fucking nuts on the person who might not even remotely have been thinking or writing about them.
The Four Agreements is a very good book and I think everyone on the planet should read it. Numbers 2 and 3 literally changed my life. People who tend to be reactive (I was one of them) should take that, read it, swallow it, absorb it, digest it and do it again until it sticks.
For the record I too am tired of seeing requests for donations. Of all kinds. Right now shit is really hard for a lot of people, myself included. But I am where I am because of the choices I made. I take responsibility for that. The end.
There’s a stereotype that black people are lazy. I don’t know if that’s true, but I know white people went all the way to Africa to get out of doing work.
I saw a post going around about what people almost got named.
I was never going to be anything other than Natasha.
My father fell in love with the name and when all of his close friends had daughters he always suggested the name but none of them used it.
So I was born, his second child and first girl, it was a given.
I have no idea what they would have done had I been a boy. My parents weren’t exactly big on planning. When my sister was born her name was, “The Baby” for fucking ever until someone suggested Cherisse.
Today’s cheese making was a success! I found the right kind of milk (super rich full cream cows milk that had not been pasteurized to death) and made a delicious batch of queso blanco. At least that’s what it’s supposed to be. Tasted like it lol. The end result there is just what was leftover that couldn’t fit in the mold. I’m trying to decide what to eat it with. Yum! @urbancheesecraft I’m super excited to try the other recipes!
I’m having one of those mornings where I keep falling back asleep. I’m having a hard time getting out of bed.
Cilantro. We call it chadon beni here (pron. shadow-benny). I never knew it tastes gross to some people. I’m wondering if it’s a white people thing because it is so prevalent here and I’ve never heard of anyone who doesn’t like it.
I had a really weird fucking dream that I had cancer and that all my girlfriends from high school were there taking care of me. That was beyond weird.
I feel a sense of horror every time Trump gains more popularity. He is obviously no longer the joke that we thought he was. And it’s scary. America you better do something because if that man becomes president that’s the end of it. And you know it.
The original post only has US helplines. I’ve added UK helplines underneath. It would be great if people could add numbers from everywhere in the world.

I bought a book today titled to the point – “Towns and Villages of Trinidad and Tobago” by Michael Anthony. There are approximately fifty towns described in it, each one dedicated seven pages to a geographical and brief historical summary. It’s a decent book, written for the layman but containing adequate information to satisfy a “local” knowledge craving.

For the sake of sharing this information, I thought I’d list one fact (usually the origin of the name) for most of the towns described in the book:
1. ARIMA is the Amerindian word for “water”. It was so named as the village was built around a river.
2. AROUCA is based around the word “Arauca”, which is the true name for the so-called Arawak.
3. The adjacent beach, BALANDRA, is named after a type of boat that docked there.
4. BARATARIA is possibly named after a prank involving a fake island of the same name in Cervantes’ Don Quixote. “Barato” itself means cheap.
5. BICHE is named after the French word for “beast” because it was first started off as a settlement for hunters.
6. The settlement was first called Ladies River, but later on a French surveyor named it after the French term for “washer-woman” -BLANCHISSEUSE.
7. When boats were docked in Port-of-Spain, they were carried along the bay to be cleaned. This was called “careening” and so sprang the nameCARENAGE.
8. CAURA was based off of an Amerindian word “Cuara” which meaning is lost now. The settlers of Caura were said to be so lazy and secluded that their village never thrived and was left mostly abandoned. A CORRECTION MADE BY A DESCENDANT FROM THE CAURA AREA: Caura ancestors were not lazy. They carried their church brick by brick to the Lopinot Valley. A dam scheduled there was never built and the Government never gave them back their land. See post here.
9. When the Spanish sailors arrived at this coast, they noticed many tall cedar trees. And they called it the Spanish word for cedars, CEDROS.
10. CHAGUANAS is named after the group of indigenous peoples that lived there, known as the Chaguanes. Smaller villages in Chaguanas were so named to positively motivate its early settlers – Felicity, Endeavour, Enterprise.
11. COUVA was a corruption of Cuba, due to the tendency to pronounce “B” as “V” in the Spanish language.
12. CUNUPIA is named after the Spanish word “conupia”, which when translated means “canopy”.
13. DIEGO MARTIN is simply named after the Spaniard who discovered it, Don Diego Martin.
14. FIFTH COMPANY VILLAGE is so named after the temporary settlement of the 5th company batch of black American soldiers who stayed here during the war of 1812.
15. The villagers were very pleased when a man named Clifton Flanagin came and built a successful railway system, and thus changed the name of their village to FLANAGIN TOWN.
16. The indentured labourers from Uttar Pradesh named FYZABAD after a province they lived next to, known as Faizabad.
17. The first spot sighted by Columbus. This spot may also be known as GALEOTA POINT, which means “galley”, as Columbus believed it to look like a galley under sail.
18. GUAYAGUAYARE was named after the indigenous mocking the sounds of the sea at that point.
19. An icaco shrub, more commonly known as “fat pork”, provided the inspiration for the name, ICACOS.
20. When Sir Walter Raleigh patched his ship up with the pitch from the Pitch Lake, he gave the village the name LA BREA, which simply means “The Pitch”.
21. LAVENTILLE is a corruption of “La Ventaille” (or The Vent), so named for the passage of the northeast trade winds through this area.
22. A new incoming Governor by the name of James Longden was determined to leave his mark on this country and so had a town named after him, called LONGDENVILLE.
23. In the 1700’s, a young man from Louisiana travelled to Santo Domingo. When war involving Touissant Louverture broke out, he sneaked into a ship, which then carried him to Trinidad. He settled in a spot there after being granted a parcel of land for cocoa. The man’s name was Charles Joseph Count de LOPINOT.
24. Along the coast there are tiny fruits known as manchineels. They are small and poisonous and look like tiny apples. The village near this coast was given the Spanish word for “little apple”, which is MANZANILLA.
25. When the Spanish visited here, they came for the seaside view. It was described as “Mar Bella”, or ‘beautiful sea’, which was later turned toMARABELLA.
26. MARACAS was so named after the musical instrument, which we sometimes call the “chac-chac”.
27. MATURA is the Spanish word for “high woods”, named by the surveyors visiting there.
28. The maya plant grew prolifically in MAYARO. The word “ro” in the Amerindian language meant “the place of”, so Mayaro denotes “the place of the maya plant”.
29. A place renowned for having spirits, MORUGA was named after a river lined with abandoned fishing settlements, with many of the villagers claiming that an apparition dwelled in the waters.
30. NAPARIMA is named from the Amerindian word “Anaparima”, which means “single hill”.
31. Due to the nearby presence of the Oropouche Lagoon and rice paddies, the dwellers took to calling the village “pengyal”, which in Tamil means “swampy area”. This was later renamed PENAL.
32. POINTE-A-PIERRE was only so named because of its French settlers – Pierre being a popular French name.
33. A man with no recorded first name, simply called Fortin, was granted land in Trinidad. It was then called POINT FORTIN.
34. PORT-OF-SPAIN, or formerly known as “Port of the Spaniards”, was a regular meeting place for Spanish sailors. Before, it was known as Cu-Mucurapo, which means “The Place of Silk Cotton Trees”.
35. Originally called the Mission of Savana Grande, the town was renamedPRINCES TOWN after a visit by Queen Victoria’s grandsons, Prince Albert and Prince George. They had each planted a poui tree near an Anglican Church, which still can be seen today.
36. RIO CLARO was named by Spanish surveyors. In English, it means “Clear River”.
37. SAN FERNANDO was so named by Governor Chacon after the infant son of Spanish King Carlos III, Prince Fernando.
38. There was a river that the Spanish saw that ran red as blood. So they named the villages near the river SANGRE GRANDE and SANGRE CHIQUITO, respectively “Big Blood” and “Little Blood”.
39. After the Arena Massacre of 1699, the Catholic parish at that area decided to give it the name SAN RAFAEL, after St. Raphael, the patron saint of healers.
40. SANTA CRUZ simply means “Holy Cross” in Spanish due to the religious zeal of the settlers there.
41. “Little Savannah” in Spanish is SAVONETTA, an early settlement for French planters.
42. SIPARIA is also known as The Sand City.
43. ST. JOSEPH was originally named after its founder, St. Jose de Oruna. It is notable that it was the first established town in Trinidad.
44. TRINCITY is a blend between Trinity and City.
45. WESTMOORINGS is so simply named because of its cardinal location and the fact that many “moorings” or boat secure points are located nearby.
I have to admit I enjoyed myself today on that party bus thing. Yes the music was too loud (I’m old dammit), and it sucks to be at the mercy of a prearranged schedule and a bus driver meandering down the endless highway to San Fernando when you desperately have to pee and are seriously considering dropping trou to go in a cup. But the company was good, the bars were entertaining, the food was yummy and at the end of the day, I can say I did it.
We have a friend celebrating his 40th birthday today and he’s doing a party bus thing.
The thought of being stuck on a bus with a bunch of people that I (mostly) won’t know, with loud music blaring in my head and alcohol flowing while travelling in a moving vehicle is basically the stuff of my nightmares.
But it’s Learie and he’s a good friend and we love him so we’re going. And at least it starts in the afternoon and ends at about 10pm. I’d rather stay home and be a lazy slob. But sometimes you gotta party bus for the ones you love.
Thank you for supporting myself and my message scribbled on a bag 6 months ago. It’s about time this industry has changed. Posen has always shown support for models of color so I am so glad he is taking the lead.
That dance scene with Tom Cruise disguised as the fat, balding what, producer was it?
It was the first time I realised Tom Cruise had a sense of humor.
Furthermore has a sense of humor about HIMSELF.
It was a delightful surprise so see him without that pole up his ass. He should take it out more often. He can do comedy. And he’s not a bad dancer. He might be only half lizard person after all.
Richmond, California. Police Chief Magnus: Why I Joined a Protest Against Police Brutality.
“The police and the community share a common goal. We want peaceful protests to be something that people feel comfortable participating in and to understand that the police are guardians, because we should be protecting people’s constitutional rights.
But we also want to send a message that we care about everyone in the community. This needs to be a partnership between police and persons of color, black, brown, whatever. We need to be working together.”
This is what I like to see – police officers that are actually woke and support Black Lives Matter movement. This also goes to show that it’s not that hard to be a good person and a good cop. Unfortunately a lot of his colleagues don’t share the same way of thinking with him and not only do they embarrass themselves, they make us think that there are no decent officers left who actually will to protect people and not abuse them. Keep it up, police. #We need to be working together!
The police walk in and you’re wearing the one on the left. When they tell you he’s dead you gasp daintily, excuse yourself for a moment, then come back in the one on the right.

Rather than fighting for every woman’s right to feel beautiful, I would like to see the return of a kind of feminism that tells women and girls everywhere that maybe it’s all right not to be pretty and perfectly well behaved. That maybe women who are plain, or large, or old, or differently abled, or who simply don’t give a damn what they look like because they’re too busy saving the world or rearranging their sock drawer, have as much right to take up space as anyone else.
I think if we want to take care of the next generation of girls we should reassure them that power, strength and character are more important than beauty and always will be, and that even if they aren’t thin and pretty, they are still worthy of respect. That feeling is the birthright of men everywhere. It’s about time we claimed it for ourselves.
ppl are so interested in aliens but how would they expect to learn about cultures from different planets/solar systems if they can’t even accept different cultures on ya own damn planet from your own damn species
The first known dress, as well as the earliest known bar and restaurant in France, were identified this week.
The discoveries, reported in the journal Antiquity, provide a glimpse of what early life was like in both ancient Egypt and southern France thousands of years ago.
The garment, which dates to around 3482 B.C., is known as the “Tarkhan Dress,” and now looks like a tattered and stained shirt. When new, however, the linen dress would have looked fashionable even today, as researchers determined it featured a natural pale grey stripe with knife-pleated sleeves and bodice. Its hem is missing, so the original length of the dress is unknown.
“The survival of highly perishable textiles in the archaeological record is exceptional, the survival of complete, or almost complete, articles of clothing like the Tarkhan Dress is even more remarkable,” Alice Stevenson, curator of the University College London (UCL) Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, said in a press release. I set up my shop there about three weeks ago, once I was able to find a workaround for their payment system (they don’t accept PayPal or non-U.S. bank accounts) and I’d been fretting about it ever since. Then yesterday I decided just fuck it. I’m not paying anything to list there (yet) so let me just leave it there and don’t worry about it.
Then today a sale. Cool.
I don’t know if I’ll keep my store there. They’re supposed to start charging a $40/month fee come August and considering they already take a 12% commission on each sale which is pretty steep, it doesn’t sound like it makes sense. I can make up the commission fee by just raising my prices. But $40/month is a lot to pay to sell on an online platform. I’ll see how it goes.
