Every so often I post some of my enamel jewelry pieces in a facebook group I belong to dedicated to enamel jewelry. People always ask me about what techniques I use.
I’ve only been working with them for a few months. But I’ve done a lot of reading about the different properties of glass, fusing temperatures for different types of enamels, and most importantly just experimented my ass off. I threw out the rule books to see what would work for me. Sometimes I’m successful in creating the effect I want, sometimes it comes out a mess, but I take meticulous notes and make sure I have an understanding of why things happen.
I’m just always surprised by how little knowledge or understanding people who have taken courses and worked in the medium for years seem to have. Maybe they just stick to what they’ve been taught and never go outside the box. Maybe they don’t combine techniques. Maybe they don’t do research and read. I don’t know. But I get these questions every single time. And I just don’t get it.
