Watch: Leslie Jones gave a touching tribute to Whoopi Goldberg about why representation matters

Gifs: The View

Just beautiful ❤ @lemonade-time

oh my god. Imagine being Whoopi and hearing that though.

Well,
when I was nine years old Star Trek came on,“ Goldberg says. “I looked
at it and I went screaming through the house, ‘Come here, mum,
everybody, come quick, come quick, there’s a black lady on television
and she ain’t no maid!’ I knew right then and there I could be anything I
wanted to be.” – See more at:

That’s three generations. Nichelle Nichols to Whoopi Goldberg to Leslie Jones.

yesterday i saw this billboard at the train station and it threw me for a loop man

it was so weird seeing the setup flipped; where the women are the ones in loose, professional clothing striking intense poses wearing intense expressions

and then there is one man in an elegant, formfitting outfit with a strict pose and attractively neutral expression with a cutesy hand gun and generally unsuitable equipment solely for eye candy

Yessss. For two years in high school I didn’t wear shoes. I took them off when I got to school and stowed them in my locker and walked around in socks. Including during snowy winter months. In hindsight gross, but whatever. I hate my feet being covered. I do love boots though. Aesthetically speaking.

I’m a boot lover myself I have a lot of pairs but if not for aesthetics I hate anything covering my feet

Every morning when I make the bed I tuck in the sheets under the mattress at the foot of the bed.

And every night I yank them out again because I will die of heat or claustrophobia if my feet can’t breathe.

I literally cannot stand to keep my covered.

This is also why I hate shoes.

Sandals for life.

FUN FACT!

IT WASN’T JUST ANY OLD DUDE WHO DECIDED, “HEY I WANT TO CREATE A KOREAN ALPHABET.”

IT WAS KING SEJONG, WHO ORDERED HIS ROYAL SCHOLARS TO CREATE THIS ALPHABET SO READING AND WRITING COULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE, EVEN THE PEASANTS. IT WAS PURPOSELY DESIGNED TO BE EASY TO LEARN.

SO SHOUT OUT TO KING SEJONG, WHO REALIZED BEFORE MANY OTHERS THE IMPORTANCE OF UNIVERSAL LITERACY.

Have Leslie’s costars from the ghostbusters movie said anything regarding how she’s being targeted by racists and sexists?

reverseracism:

People saying that they don’t have social media…

You don’t need social media as a celebrity to get your word out. You can make statements and literally any entertainment news channel will air/cover it.

Also, with that being said Melissa McCarthy JUST posted on her Twitter like 4 hours ago so “not having social media” really doesn’t cut it as an excuse.

It’s truly maddening, because they discuss the sexism and the cast was all on board the feminism train when it came to disappointing male haters about the film and having an all women cast…. but I guess this just proves that their feminism isn’t intersectional.

#LoveForLeslieJ

wtf though?

I took a nap this evening and woke up with a headache that won’t go away.

Steups

They have a new show on HGTV that’s basically house hunters for farms. It’s called I Bought The Farm. It’s so awesome.

My friend Rohan always keeps me waiting so I’m making good use of my time by taking selfies.

I got up at 4:30 from a mild asthma attack that came as a coughing fit. Nothing a few puffs couldn’t fix. But then I couldn’t go back to sleep. So I packed Chris lunch and have a nice cup of chai and I’m trying to figure how I’m gonna spend the rest of my morning.

I’m actually kinda upset that I finished Stranger Things. Cause it was SO GOOD. Even while I was watching it I wanted to draw it out a little, you know like how you do with a really good book so you don’t reach the ending so fast? But now I’ve seen it so sad face. The Duffer Brothers need to make more stuff. Fast.

A family friend just called me and asked if I could design her bridesmaid jewellery. I had no idea she’d even gotten engaged (December) and her wedding is in August, she told me she invited my mom.

Anyway we talked ideas for a while and then hung up. And I was left feeling really appreciative of that fact that she felt comfortable calling me even though she hadn’t invited me to the wedding. Cause I know people get really sensitive about that, even though I really don’t think you should ever have to justify your guest list to anyone. Anyhow I’m glad I get a commission and I don’t have to go to a wedding in August. Everybody wins!

Gustave Courbet, Le Sommeil,1866.

Le Sommeil [The Sleepers], which depicts two women entwined in a post-coital embrace, caused a stir when it was first shown in the 1870s. The police were called in, and the painting was not shown again until the 1980s. But its brief showing had an influence on a number of contemporary artists, and helped challenge the taboos associated with lesbian relationships. For modern audiences it’s a good reminder that people in the 19th century were not ignorant of lesbian relationships, as we tend to believe. And it’s pretty damn sexy, don’t you think?

They called the police on this lesbian painting.

i just can’t fathom how someone could even think that there is a ‘side’ to ‘choose’ with BLM like we literally just want black people to not be disregarded and killed like we’re some inferior race, there is no fucking side to pick just stop killing us how is that even an argument

Hand chain or harem bracelet… Found some new names for these. Also hand flower. This one is a sample design with dark blue and gold beads. #jewlery #handmade #caribbean #trinidad #handchain #harembracelet #handflower

I didn’t watch the convention last night cause nigga please, but I was following the news. And I have to say that very little about it surprises me. I mean the verbatim speech copying did, but not all the second and third-tier supporters (Scott Baio?! bwahaha), not the racist bullshit, not the lies, not the propaganda.

If I didn’t know better I’d think America had gone mad. But I know there’s tons of people out there watching this shitshow wondering how the fuck it got this far. I think they’re out to fuck Trump’s shit up. The speech was just part of it. I think they’re gonna find every way they can to drag him down and stomp his ass into the dust. I don’t believe for a second that the machinery will allow this lunatic into the hallowed oval office. There’s too much at stake. I’ve been convinced of it before and I believe last night I saw evidence.

I’ve bee working furiously today and only just stopped for lunch and a little rest.

Chris wants to take me to a lime later.

I can’t decide if I should just go back to work and get ready later or stop working from now.

If I go back to work I’m only gonna get about another hour in before I have to stop again. Or I could just relax for the rest of the day. But I’m on a roll. Ugh. I don’t know what to do. Let me just sit here and write about it instead.

casaofjules2 replied to your post: “Melania Trump Plagiarized Her Convention Speech From Michelle Obama”:

She read a plagiarized speech. No way did she “write” it herself. Semantics, I know. But we shouldn’t give her more credit than she’s due. But ALSO, they are garbage and this all seems like a horrible nightmare.

Well I didn’t think she PERSONALLY wrote it of course it was just the headline lol. But I find it really ironic. Inside sabotage maybe?

Ok. Now that I have your attention, I have a proposition for y’all.

Below a picture shows off the latest design I learned for a self-defense keychain. I prefer it over the bland looking monkeyfist I have been making over the years I have been crafting in paracord.

I can hear you saying, James this is all well and good, but where do I fit in? Well, let me tell you.

I am offering a two for one deal on the keychain shown below. This one is $20 plus $5 shipping, and it will afford me the chance to buy golf balls in something other than white, and you will get the first one of the non-white golf ball versions of this keychain free. Consider yourself a silent-partner in Copperhead Paracord.

If you’re interested in being an “investor” in this, please give me a shout in the tumblr messenger app, or through my askbox.

Thank you,

Last night after Ghostbusters, I stopped to talk to one of the young men about my age. (We had previously established that we both had an interest in film, and he was a relatively well-mannered individual who gave me some recommendations for research websites.) We were both enthusiastic about the film and its quality, but suddenly he stopped and frowned.

“I’m just not sure about Kevin,” he said in confusion. “He’s kind of pointless, isn’t he? Why did they need a character like that? I’ve never seen anything like it before…”

I gaped at him briefly. “Haven’t you ever heard about the Dumb Blonde Trope?”

He wrinkled his nose. “Yeah, but isn’t that typically for…” His eyes got wide, and he looked at me in absolute terror. “Oh.”

“Oh” is right, buddy.

thoughts swirling in my head like

– how sometimes I read people’s posts and I wonder what the fuck are they thinking

– how much time I’ve spent trying to word that without coming across as judgemental and concluded that I can’t. And maybe I am.

– how I unfollowed someone recently that I’d followed for years because they made their views known on an issue and I couldn’t tolerate it because I think it’s a ridiculous either/or way of thinking that is ignorant at best

– how when I checked they had already unfollowed me

– how pissed I was that during HouseHunters International in Paris I had to get up to pee

– how I’m in love with a city I have never seen or stepped foot in

So on my website for my stamped jewellery I have a picture with all the different font and symbol options that I have.

And for some reason people keep asking for stuff that I don’t have.

Can I get an anchor?

Nooooo…. cause…. I don’t have one?

I dunno like it’s hard or something.

And that’s an honest question. Can I honestly say that I’ve had to face the same racism and struggles as a woman with darker skin? No, I cannot. I have not walked in her shoes and that is unfair of me to say. But I’m completely behind that woman. I want to be a part of the movement and growth. And if I get put in a position because of the color of my skin where people will listen to me, then I should use that privilege the right way.”

Zendaya Coleman: ‘I Don’t Face the Same Struggles as a Woman With Darker Skin’

Sunday

I watched the original Ghostbusters today. It was fun. I now understand the video game I bought a while back a lot better. I’m prepped now for the new one.

Also my iPad resuscitated itself so yay.

Plus I made cupcakes today and I think I realised I actually don’t really like cupcakes. Cake is better. The icing to cake ratio is better dispersed.

Chris made me crepes for breakfast and I thought it was really sweet of him cause a) he never made them before, b) got up and made the batter while I was sleeping and c) only really made them cause he knows I love them, he’s not really a pancake kind of guy. They were yummy. Plus bacon Mmm.

I’m so happy I have the kind of marriage I always dreamt of.

I know we’re supposed to be over the honeymoon phase by now and I think we are but I do love him more every day. And I also like him more every day. That’s important too. We are very good friends.

Stranger Things

Last night we decided to check out Stranger Things. I’m so glad we did. It’s a really well-written show that’s reminiscent of The Goonies, E.T., and Close Encounters of the Third Kind all wrapped up in one.

If you’re someone my age it will be particularly appealing because it’s set in the early-mid 80’s and the protagonists are around my age then. They really get it right with the fashion and the props.

The story itself is really intriguing and I did not want to take it off. It’s smart and scary and keeps you wanting more. I can’t wait to finish it.

fuuuck we don’t have PBS anymore. fucking flow asshole fucking cable company fuck y’alll shit man

The other day Chris was lamenting that it felt like he hadn’t eaten any good food in a while. I haven’t cooked in a bit so I decided to make him stew chicken and macaroni pie today. I’ve never made a macaroni pie before. I don’t like creole food so I don’t cook it. Plus it’s really unhealthy. But I know he loves it. I hope it tastes at least decent.

Artist Paints the Universe and Nature into Black Women’s Hair

Pierre Jean-Louis is a multimedia artist based in New York and Philadelphia, who has built up quite a social media following as a result of his unique works. Jean-Louis paints mystical images of the universe and nature onto images of Black women’s natural hair. His intricate works feature flowers, vines, and even an entire forest, all seamlessly woven into coils and kinks. Jean-Louis even invites his followers to tag him in their photos on Instagram so that he can consider their portraits as well.

Wow…😍

This is so magical…

I just logged into Facebook for the first time today and saw that a friend got shot. He offered a man a lift this morning and the guy tried to rob him and shot him in the leg. He was able to drive himself to the hospital and he’s listed as being in serious but stable condition.

Dave works as a freelance copywriter so we’ve worked on a bunch of projects together. The worst part is that he’s a dancer professionally (which of course does not pay the bills which is why he also freelances). I hope this doesn’t affect his ability to continue dancing.

I mean this is what we’ve come to Trinidad? Someone does something out of the goodness of their heart and you fucking rob and shoot them? I mean.. what the fuck man.

I was telling Chris how psyched I was about seeing the new Ghostbusters and then I realised that I’d never seen the first one.

I mean I’ve seen it, in bits and pieces here and there, but I’ve never seen it all at once. I have no idea how that happened cause I distinctly remember when it came out, it was all everybody could talk about.

So anyway now I have to watch it. Not a bad thing.

Anti blackness is global

ultrafacts:

A subversive urban agricultural group in San Francisco is turning ornamental trees into fruit-producing surprises for the local population but while technically breaking the law. A simple incision allows industrious grafters to add living branches to the mix; these scions heal in place then effectively become part of the existing tree.

“The streets of San Francisco are lined with pear, plum and apple trees, but out of fear that the fruit would make a mess and attract rodents, the city intentionally planted sterile trees that don’t bear fruit. By grafting fruit-bearing branches on those trees, Guerrilla Grafters make fruit free and accessible to anyone who picks it.

A fresher form of guerilla gardening, traditionally carried out through seed bombs and other surreptitious planting techniques, this approach makes existing plants yield free produce.

Organized by Tara Hui, Margaretha Haughwout and Ian Pollock, Guerrilla Grafters leaves subtle hints in the form color-coded tape behind to mark their work, eschewing maps to avoid detection.

I thought permanent hair dye might be the solution. But no… dye is not the problem. It’s my hair. It grows so fucking fast I can’t keep up. I know this is not a real problem to have but when you have tons of silver-grey hair it’s a fucking problem.

Double chains! #slavebracelet #turquoise #gold #jewelry #trinidad #caribbean #handmade

Worked out the measurements for this, it should comfortably fit most hands. I’d replace the metal beads with more gemstones but I’m supper happy with it. If anyone can suggest a better name than the current “slave bracelet” I’d be happy to hear it. On to production! #jewelry #bracelet #handchain #slavebracelet #handmade #trinidad #caribbean

Oh well I’ll just replace it with something cheaper. I don’t have the money for an iPad right now at ALL (remember I won that one?).

I only used it to stream Netflix in the studio… it was five years old. RIP 😦

I think my iPad finally bit the dust.

This is really upsetting.

What is going to keep me company when I’m working now?

mistavybe replied to your post “7, 17, & 27 pretty please”

I grew up on Enid Blyton too! Wish some of her books/concepts were made into movies or tv shows. I’d kill for a Wishing Chair series on like Netflix lol. Or a Faraway Tree movie ☺️

Yes those were my favourites! I guess the technology wasn’t there back then. They DID have a series about the Famous Five (god I can even remember the theme song) and I LOVED it, the casting was perfect too they all looked like I had pictured them in the books. But it’s sad that all her other amazing stories never made it to tv or the movies.

Man they weren’t kidding when they said compression tights. I look like I lost ten pounds!

Seattle teacher Jesse Hagopian was on his way home during Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2015. After he gave his speech he called his mother while crossing the street when the police officer Sandra DeLaFuente pepper sprayed him and the other pedestrians.

Luckily, the incident was caught on video.

image
image

“I was hit in the face with pepper spray — burning my ear, my mouth, and my eyes,” Hagopian said at a press conference with representatives of the King County NAACP. “The pain was excruciating. I spent the entire birthday party pouring milk on my face — frightening my kids, not sure what to tell them.”

image

Hagopian received  $100,000 settlement but is not gonna keep it.

“I did reach a settlement with the City of Seattle for $100,000,” he said. “But I want it to be clear that $100,000 is not justice. The office of professional accountability did rule in my favor. It did say that this officer violated policy and should face a suspension — a one-day suspension.”

He decided to give the money to Black Lives Matter organization.

image

“I was peacefully raising my voice for justice on Martin Luther King Day last year,” he said. “I gave the final rally speech at the main event that I called out people who pretend to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and then disparage the Black Lives Matter movement — as if he wouldn’t be in the streets supporting it. As if he hadn’t been arrested over 40 times in the struggle for racial, economic and social justice. Apparently, not all the police officers liked that speech.”

Such people give me hope in the better future.

7. First kiss details? (If you haven’t been kissed, reply how and if you would like to be.)

Oh wow. So the summer after Chris and I became an item, a very chaste and innocent item, his family flew over the Venezuela for a few weeks of vacation. They came home by us one night and we all (kids) ended up hanging out on the roof of the house which had the most spectacular view of the city. Eventually everyone left us alone. Chris was nervous because he was afraid of heights. I was nervous with anticipation. And finally he kissed me. Then he pulled away and saw my face and grinned because I obviously didn’t like it. He didn’t take it personally and undaunted, we tried again and I started getting the hang of it until we hit full on make out session mode. Kissing was awesome! Still is. I was fifteen then.

17. Favorite game as a child?
Any kind of make believe. I grew up devouring Enid Blyton books. She was a British author and her books were filled with fantastic tales about talking animals, pixies, goblins, fairies, animate toys and all sorts of adventures. I loved playing make believe and spent a lot of time by myself living in my own little fantasy world.

27. What makes you smile?
The thought of my niece. Stories that show the kindness and humanity of other people. Thinking back to good times spent with friends. Hearing about something good happening to another person. Seeing Chris when he comes home.

Thanks for the asks these were great!

21 & 26

21. Favorite word? Giggle. It always makes me.

26. Do you lie? Yes but as rarely as possible. I really do not like to lie.

Thanks for asking!

41- your worst fear as a kid

Seeing as I answered that already I’ll just pick one at random:

25. Has anyone ever confessed to you?

Oh gosh yes. People have a tendency to open up to me. I’ve listened to a lot of confessions. Thankfully no one’s ever told me anything that I couldn’t live with.

the questions in the 40s :)

40. The best dream/worst nightmare you’ve ever had?
Oh man flying. The best dreams I’ve ever had have been about flying. I’ve had some really vivid nightmares and I dreamt my mom and I were in a plane that was about to crash once. I wouldn’t say it was a nightmare as such because while it was scary, once I realised we were going to die I got very calm.

41. Worst fear as a kid?
I dunno I wasn’t really afraid of like, the dark or monsters or anything. Probably ghosts? Parents dying?

44. Do you flirt?
Seems like some of the questions got left out oh well. Flirt. I used to. I flirt with my husband now. That’s about it. I really don’t think it’s proper for me to flirt with anybody else.

45. What’s your style?
Well this is a really broad question so I’ll answer it as such. Casual. Artsy. Relaxed.

46. Do you blush?
Terribly. I can feel it too. I hate attention. I blush furiously when I’m complemented or when all eyes are on me. I hate it.

47. Do you feel everything, nothing, or you don’t know what to feel?
Everything.

48. Are you a crier? Do you smile?
I don’t cry often. I smile a lot, especially when I’m around my friends.

49. First love?
Chris of course, my husband.

Thanks for the questions!
