shopping for an ‘eve’ bodysuit combo reminded me how massively fucked up that ‘nude’ assumes ‘white’ when there are so many fucking shades of nude

let’s end this white supremacist notion of nude for christsakes

As the nomenclature of colors was created by white people it’s completely understandable that nude would refer to peach skin.

understandable that it *would* & understandable that it continues to are two entirely separate things, & precisely my point which you’ve completely missed.

Peach. Champagne. Taupe. Beige. Honey. Sand. Cream. Tan.

Nude is so fucking lazy.

If you’re going to call something nude it better include every skin colour on the spectrum.

Everything good is costly, and the development of the personality is one of the most costly of all things. It will cost you your innocence, your illusions, your certainty.

Carl Jung  (via hthrloo)

Damn. For real tho

I was watching this documentary on photography and one of the people in it made an interesting observation. He said that when people remember things, they see it as a snapshot. And I thought, that it’s mostly true. We remember moments that eventually just freeze in time. And considering that our world is always in motion, it’s strange that when we think back, much of what we see is still, like a picture.

I made it to the gym today.

I hadn’t been for a week. Shit kept getting in the way and one day I blew off to go drinking.

My mind was trying to talk me out of it but I went and I felt really good afterwards. The endorphins are so totally worth it.

stuff

I spent the day painting watercolour bookmarks to send to my customers instead of making more jewelry. It was really relaxing and I made some really pretty stuff. I’m excited for someone to buy something so I can send one off.

Chris finally made it to the doctor today and was diagnosed with bronchitis and prescribed antibiotics. He is not one of those men who acts like they’re in labour when they have a cold thank god, so he must be feeling really horrible to have been flat out in bed for the past three days, poor love.

I don’t think I’m very good at taking care of sick people. But then sick people will tell you otherwise so I don’t know.

My latest obsession with my store is upgrading my packaging. Every now and then I get a bee in my bonnet and I have to change things. I’m looking into sealing wax if that gives you any idea.

It’s been almost two months since the last UpMarket and I feel antsy. I made enough money to carry me through but I have new stock and I really want to get it out there. I would love to have a studio/storefront someday. It would make my life so much easier. But that is mucho dinero. In time.

It turns out bigly is a word, says lexicographer and Merriam-Webster editor Kory Stamper. “Bigly is, in fact, an adverb,” she says. “It’s just a really rare adverb that doesn’t have much use today.”

Bigly’s meaning has also changed through the years.

“It originally meant violently or strong,” Stamper says. “Over time, it actually came to mean pompous or in an arrogant manner, which is kind of ironic.”

So, bigly is a word. But is that really what Trump is saying? Many people argue that Trump is actually saying the phrase big-league — including Susan Lin, professor at the University of California, Berkeley. The phonetician studies speech and the sounds that people produce when talking.

6. They are flexible, and willing to adapt or change.

7. They know their limitations, and are happy to be helped.

8. They forgive themselves willingly – and then move on with life.

(I work the floor at an independently-owned menswear store. The owner, my boss, spends a lot of time at the shop, and tries to keep prices as low as possible to help our city’s large homeless population get good job interview clothes. A clearly homeless man is wandering around the store. The other patrons are giving him looks.)

Customer: “Excuse me, sir?”

Me: “Yes, ma’am?”

Customer: “I think you may want to call security. That… bum over there, he keeps feeling the suits and muttering to himself. I’m just sure he’s planning to steal one.”

Me: “Well, ma’am, I think that’s quite unlikely.”

Customer: “Oh, come on, you know how they are! I mean, I’d keep an eye on him even if he wasn’t homeless!”

(The homeless man in question happens to be Hispanic.)

Me: “We don’t discriminate here, ma’am.”

Customer: “Well, I’m sure the owner would want to hear about this!”

(I give in and call him over. The customer explains her concerns. As a black man, my boss isn’t happy with her racism, but agrees to talk to the homeless man.)

Owner: “Excuse me, sir, are you finding what you need?”

Homeless Man: “Well, not really. I’m hoping for something versatile in a dark or navy wool, but most of the options in my size are cut American style instead of European, which fits me a little better. Not to mention they’re all pinstriped, which I really don’t have the build for, you know?”

Owner: “I… yes, I understand. I think we may have some options over here, if you’ll follow me. How did you know all that?”

Homeless Man: “Back before I lost my job, I used to be really into this stuff. I’m not looking for anything fancy, just something I can use to look good for a job interview later today.”

(My boss helps him find something he likes, and comes to the counter with him. The suit is priced at $87.)

Homeless Man: *digging in his pockets* “Hang on, I think I’ve got enough.”

Owner: *to me* “Take my card. I’m buying it for him.” *to the homeless man* “Here. The suit’s yours, on one condition. After your interview today, you come back and apply for a job here too. Got it?”

Homeless Man: “I… oh my God, thank you. Thank you so much.”

(Two years later, that formerly-homeless man is my manager, and has a little girl with his new wife—the owner’s sister.)

Dr. Me

Tonight Chris was liming with some friends and one of them who had met me last time asked him if I was a doctor.

Apparently we had all been having a conversation and whatever my contribution was lead him to believe I was in the medical field.

Chris laughed and explained that while I am very intelligent I am not a doctor but an artist and he was totally flummoxed with that one.

I for one got really excited that I could could get mistaken for a doctor. It kinda made my night but also left me wondering if I hadn’t been so lazy at school if I’d actually have become something as prestigious as a doctor. But then I remembered that being an artist wasn’t exactly a choice so I ate my garlic naan and felt good about being myself for a bit.

Jalebi

We had our anniversary dinner tonight, one day early because the restaurant isn’t open on Sundays. Nepalese/Indian food it was divine.

I had jalebi for dessert. I cannot remember the last time I had jalebi.

When we were kids our dad used to take us down to where the old airport was on a Sunday evening, and the Indian vendors would sell jalebi and korma on the side of the road, and we’d stand there munching on Indian delicacies and watch the planes taking off and dream about faraway places.

I cannot eat jalebi and not think about my dad, and planes in the air, leaving for destinations unknown.

Labradorite is quickly becoming one of my favorite stones, I love how it changes colour when viewed from different angles. I spent the day booking our tickets for our Christmas vacation. God what a nightmare, flights and prices were changing while I was booking, the the bank flagged the card for suspicious activity so for a while I was juggling credit cards. Ugh. Then after I got it all sorted I found a shorter return flight had opened up and I really wanted to kick something. I can’t change it now (too expensive).

I’m trying to figure out when to close up shop. We’re leaving on December 19th. I’m guessing I should stop taking orders at least four days before that. Right?

Bilinguals overwhelmingly report that they feel like different people in different languages. It is often assumed that the mother tongue is the language of the true self. (…) But, it first languages are reservoirs of emotion, second languages can be rivers undammed, freeing their speakers to ride different currents.

Love in Translation by Lauren Collins from the New Yorker, August 8 & 15, 2016  (via 3minho)

I speak Trini dialect, Spanish, and American English and I feel like a different person with each one.

surprise motherfucker

Again. I don’t get why the media and whoever else is so shocked/horrified/appalled that Trump said he would not necessarily accept the results of the election. How can anyone be surprised that he said that? How do people keep getting shocked by the things he says? Every ridiculous, insulting, uneducated, demeaning, uninformed, ignorant, inflammatory, racist, incendiary thing he has said, was exactly what I expected of him.

Maybe I am just too cynical.

So basically every weekend until I leave for my Christmas vacation on the 19th I have a market to do.

I usually do one a month and I usually spend a minimum of a week stressing and preparing for it.

I think I’m gonna die. It’s like seven markets. I don’t even think I have enough stock for that. And I have a lot of stock.

Bitches better be buying cause I got a car to fix and a trip to Mexico to pay for.

Sheeeeeeiiiiiiiit.

A man on facebook just told me that the reason women get harassed on the street is because we don’t hit on men first.

what the everloving fuck?

thrilled

I just got a call from the organizer of Bits and Pieces, a local market that takes place every year here, that they had a table open for me for the next market.

I can’t tell you guys how fucking thrilled I am. EVERY vendor has told me that this is the market to go to. That the customers come to BUY BUY BUY. And for I’ve been trying to get a table for ages but she is always booked up to the max.

The last time I spoke to her she actually told me she wished some of her jewelry vendors would cancel because she really loved my pieces.  Well she had a photographer cancel on her today and she chose me for the table.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaas

My cable just went bezerk so now I have to stream the debate.

It’s like the Russians don’t want me to watch or something.

I’m not sure why I’m surprised but in a situation where Trump has to be calm and give measured responses he is even less coherent than he usually is. How do you talk for two minutes and say nothing?

And “bigly” is not a fucking word!

“Anne Bonny and Mary Read were pirates, as renowned for their ruthlessness as for their gender, and during their short careers challenged the sailors’ adage that a woman’s presence on shipboard invites bad luck.”

Sculpture by Erik Christianson.

I’m not entirely sure that the statue really needed to have a tit out.

How dare women try to have nipples.

Actually I’ve seen this before and I can tell you— it’s because these women were bad ass pirates and when they killed someone they’d expose one or both breasts so that when their victim died, (s)he knew that they were killed by a woman.

ACTUALLY Anne Bonny purposely wore loose fitting clothes and displayed her breasts openly at all times during battle – mainly because men were distracted by them, and she took pleasure in killing said men while they were too busy staring at her breasts. Mary Read dressed mainly as a man (after posing as her deceased brother, Mark, for the entirety of her childhood) and both ladies cross-dressed from time to time, hopping between ships. They were known as the ‘fierce hell cats’ due to their ferocious tempers, and were key elements to Captain ‘Calico Jack’ Rackham’s crew – they were the only two known female pirates in the Golden Age of Caribbean piracy. IN FACT, when the ship was captured by the British Navy, Anne and Mary were the ONLY TWO pirates who fought while the males of the crew hid – they were all tried to be hung as pirates but Bonny and Read were both pregnant and were pardoned.

Calico Jack was a lover to Bonny, and as he was to be hung, Bonny’s final words to him were, “Had you fought like a man, you need not be hung like a dog.” Bonny and Read were possibly two of the most badass fucking pirates and they were FEMALE. The more you know.

Accurate, except I don’t think they were pardoned for being pregnant, I think it was just a stay of execution temporarily.  It was also widely rumored that they were lovers as well.  Total badasses.

I am drunk, and I am tired.

I was reminded tonight that this was my only comment last time we hung out and drama ensued. Sounds legit.

I find alot of British series do this well… Luther for instance. Also Merlin (the BBC series), if you’re into swords & sorcery, dragons, etc. I also kind of dig the integration of POC into the Elementary series (Sherlock Holmes in modern day NY premise) on CBS. I would list Atlanta as well but alot of ppl probably view that as a “black” show.

Oh yes Merlin is good for that…. I need to start back watching that. I fucking LOVE Atlanta but I do see it as a Black show. But man it is a GREAT show.

myselfoverme replied to your post “I’d really like to see more movies and television shows with POC where…”

Me and my roommate have gotten really into Bones lately and part of why is because there are so many women and POC scientists who are just really kickass scientists. I’ve also found a lot of British crime tv is better for this as well.

I’ve actually always meant to check out that show.

And I find British tv overall tends to treat POC characters like just people. I think that has a lot to do British culture in that everyone is still pretty much the same no matter their race they’re still a Brit and it’s still a unifying culture. Trinidad is like that too. Maybe that’s why it exhausts me when POC are always portrayed as being defined by their ethnicity on American tv. It’s not like that for everyone.

My asthma has been really activated by (I’m assuming) all the pet dander from Charlie’s stay.

I’ve had cats before but not indoor cats. They always spent their days roaming, not around me.

I’ve had to use my inhaler a lot these past few days and even though I aired out the house and vacuumed yesterday it’s still pretty bad.

I just changed the sheets and threw my comforter in the dryer for an hour, I’m hoping that will help.

I’m thinking my days of pet-sitting are over.

Shucks.

I really need to start using our slow cooker more. I mean it’s like, effortless cooking, just season your shit and leave it in there all day. It’s actually the perfect kind of cooking for me cause that way I can end my day in the studio later knowing I don’t have to stop to make dinner.

I should have had this thought earlier today. I could have defrosted some meat to throw something in the slow cooker in the morning.

Steups.

I’d really like to see more movies and television shows with POC where being a POC is not an integral part of the identity of the character. Like just portraying POC as just plain people without making their ethnicity a “thing”.

29, 35, 86

29. what’s the worst thing you have ever done?

You know, I’ve asked myself this question up until relatively recently. Nothing I’ve ever done has ever been that bad. But more importantly, as someone who a) was raised Catholic and b) grew up in my particular family, I grew up feeling guilty for breathing. So my life has been a long effort toward learning to have love, compassion, patience and understanding toward myself. So anything awful I may have done I don’t hold on to or continue to condemn myself for, so it’s hard for me to answer. But off the top of my head, I think shoving someone when I was angry is something I’ve done that I felt terrible about.

35. who is your celebrity crush?

Idris baby

86. what is your phone background?

It’s a simple purple gradient with what looks like bubbles rising up.

As much as I hate PMSing, I really appreciate the boost of energy I get every month when I go into I-have-to-clean-everything mode. My house looks pretty spotless right now.

93, 96, and 98, please! :-)

93. last thing you ate?

How weird to be asked that twice lol, popcorn.

96. day or night?

Definitely night

98. favorite month?

Never really had one but I guess I’ll say December because Christmas is my favourite time of the year, when I get to spend time with my family.

Thanks for the asks!

4, 88 & 93 please

4. do you like your name? why?

Yes I always have. Natasha feels strong, sensual and sexy to me in all its Russian glory. It has always felt like me, to me.

88. do you like it when people play with your hair?

Eh. Yes and no. Most people mess up curly hair so it takes all the fun of having it played with.

93. last thing you ate?

Popcorn while watching Westworld!

Thanks for the asks!

Chris thinks Westworld is the cure for insomnia. I think he likes the premise but the execution can be a little slow. Anyway he fell asleep watching it again tonight. I was playing Candy Crush.

ASK ME!

I could do with some questions

So I’ve been added to a Facebook chat with a bunch of my old schoolmates. Apparently the class of ‘92 reunion (my year) has morphed into a class of ’89-’94 reunion (we were a small school we knew everyone). For some reason everybody in the chat is speaking only Spanish which is odd. Anyway I’m not a fan of large group settings so I wouldn’t attend, but I have to admit it would be nice to see everyone again. Just not on a cruise. That sounds like a nightmare.

Charlie’s mummies picked him up on their way home from the airport tonight. They were excited to take him home. In true cat fashion he didn’t look like he even knew who they were.

They brought me a lovely gift of some paintbrushes and a set of acrylic paints (Chris pointed them to my Amazon wishlist) which was much appreciated and very needed as a lot of my art supplies are remnants from my college days and in need of an update (I cannot believe I used to paint with such shitty brushes).

It’s nice to have the place to ourselves again. I’m going to do some vacuuming tomorrow and open all the windows to air out the apartment as my asthma and sinuses have been going crazy. I’m looking forward to having some fresh air flow through here again. I’m going to miss having him around but I miss breathing well even more.

I bought a Himalayan salt lamp and I set it up on the desk in the corner of the bedroom. It’s more orange than the pictures but it does give off a really lovely warm glow. I don’t know if all the supposed health benefits of salt lamps are true or not but I always thought they were beautiful and wanted one for a really long time so I’m just enjoying basking in the glow right now.

I mean… Kamla, Bas, Moonilal et al have said their fair share of offensive things. Just sans actual obscenity at least. Remember when Rowley was accused of rape? Or when Jack essentially said Kamla had drunken weed orgies? And Anil and the hookers and weed, then trying to assassinate his wife’s outside man! Fun times we livin in

Yeah we nuh backwards neither
