I should have this down by now. I get up at about 5:30 to get to Green Market before 7 and every Friday night I find myself unable to get to bed at a decent hour. So I end up tired and sleep deprived.

Tomorrow’s market is a kid’s market. I don’t know if it really even makes sense going but I guess whatever money I make will be better than no money.

But like, a kids market. Ugh. Little kids get really handsy around jewelry man. It’s gonna be stressful. 

I was by my mechanic today and I took a peek over the wall into his yard and the dude had TWENTY dogs (that I could see anyway). I had to count twice to make sure I was seeing right. I mean, who has twenty dogs? Why?

The weird thing was that they were all kind of the same mutt-brown colour and similar sizes so they actually looked like half as many. It was like an optical illusion or something.

But seriously twenty dogs? I love dogs but not that much.

Most of you know I’m a software developer. The current gig uses a ticketing system. What management hates is high numbers of unsolved tickets. My supervisor talks about the numbers every week. Ticket volume is always something of concern. A surge in one area indicates a problem.

While tagging @staff​ may make it seem like you’re doing something useful, I have my doubts that they have any kind of efficient means of tracking what their mentions indicate. 

What I did today was open a support ticket via http://tumblr.com/support  that was both a complaint and request for what their efforts actively removing Nazi and white supremacist tumblr accounts

I got a generic – ‘we are reviewing your request’ email in response and then I got a canned email response directing toward their abuse site

To which I replied

My point here is to hit their ticketing system. If they’re flooded with tickets related to the topic maybe that will sway them? 

You can also protest by boycotting tumblr on 9/1. I’ve seen that reblog [x] going around. Though I’m not sure if that will affect their ad revenue significantly if it’s not a high number of folks who protest. Does anyone have any information on that?

I spent my afternoon clearing out the rest of my dad’s old documents and books from his study while my mom watched supervised.

I found a manila envelope filled with pictures that had been taken at official work events over the years. Some of them were really great pictures of him so I kept them all.

There was another picture of him and Castro (Fidel) that was actually even nicer than the one I have framed that I’d never seen. Another, an official portrait taken at some even with him and Bas (ex prime minister of Trinidad) both of them grinning ear to ear looking like they were having a great time. 

I think I’ll get some of them framed. They’re history. It made me so proud to see him, his career over the decades. Everyone I’ve ever met who knew him always spoke so highly of him, of his intelligence, eloquence, and dedication to his job.

I’ve been missing him a lot lately. I need his support. I need his advice. I miss our talks. I miss sitting with him on the porch with a rum and coke talking to him about whatever was happening in my life at the time. I can still hear his voice telling me that it’s going to be ok. I’ve been going through a hard time lately. And I just wish I had him here to help me figure out what to do.

The death toll from a devastating landslide and flooding that hit Sierra Leone earlier this week has risen to nearly 500, according to hospital officials.

More than 600 people remained missing on Sunday, with rescue officials warning that the chances of finding survivors are decreasing each day. The death toll earlier stood at 450.

One of Africa’s worst flooding-related disasters in years occurred when the side of Mount Sugar Loaf collapsed on Monday after heavy rain, burying parts of Regent town on the outskirts of the capital, Freetown.

Churches across the country held special services on Sunday in memory of those killed.

Authorities this week buried 461 bodies in quickly-dug graves in the nearby Waterloo cemetery.

Six days after the mudslide, at least 10,000 people have already been forced from their homes.

The government has called for the evacuation of another 10,000 people living on an unstable hillside in Freetown, where a large crack has opened.

anyway over 400 people are dead in Sierra Leone and hundreds are missing by a horrific mudslide and it really sucks how it’s not being talked about just because it’s not a western country. helpers can donate to Save the Children’s Sierra Leone Mudslide Relieft Fund. It’s okay if you can’t donate, not everyone has it like that. but it doesn’t hurt to spread the world about this heartbreaking tragedy that is happening in a 3rd world country. 

Chris and I were just reminiscing about Telematch. Did y’all ever watch that in the States? This German show where different towns competed against each other and the participants had to wear these outrageous costumes or navigate against crazy oversized props to win a race or beat the clock? Man it was entertaining. We should bring it back. The world could do with that kind of levity.

I caught a cramp in my foot so I twisted it in the opposite direction and then it started cramping on the other side and so I just had to keep working it back and forth. Then of course my calf cramped up. Currently have my heating pad wrapped around my foot and just hoping for the best. Like that maybe my other leg will chill.

– Green Market was unbelievably humid this morning. I was setting up and sweat was streaming down my face and my tshirt was soaked. It’s cooled down now thankfully.

– My friends Gerry and Andrew came by and Gerry gifted me with a beautiful ripe avocado and Andrew treated me to breakfast.

– A lovely woman just came by my table and bought my most expensive piece.

– Someone was giving away free vegetable based soap that is ginseng and green tea scented so I got a bar. It smells great.

– I have a new umbrella to protect me from the sun and my pieces from the rain so I could set up my table outdoors for more visibility.

Life is good

I heard someone the other day say in all seriousness that the reason it’s called a forehead is because you’re supposed to be able to fit four fingers on it.

I just left it there cause I mean…

I just want to let y’all know that your responses to and comments on my jewelry really mean a lot to me. The support and encouragement I get from you guys is so meaningful to me. Thank you.

Honestly, as a mixed race person, I cannot imagine the stress people of colour in the United States have to deal with living life on a daily basis in a place where there is so much virulent hate against them. This is something I have never dealt with where I live. Being brown or being mixed is normal where I live. Where I live white people are the exception, and whiteness is not the norm or standard, it’s unusual. I cannot imagine the psychological pressure of living in a place where you know that your mere existence causes people to wish you dead and gone. It has got to take a really heavy toll on a person’s psyche. Spiritually speaking that must so damaging. I really have so much empathy. And yet I am also so grateful that this is not my reality.

I really want to take a nap. But I have my drawing class in two hours. I hate when I want to sleep but have things to do. Steupssss.

I’ve started meditating more regularly (or trying to). I’ve done it in the past and always stopped having a regular practice, but this time I’m using two meditation apps, Aura and Insight Timer. I’ve been doing guided meditations for years but this is the first time I’ve used them for a regular practice. 

I seem to have a very strong resistance to meditation and I don’t know why. It makes me feel really good so I don’t know why I fight it, but I do. Using the apps helps a lot though. Today I did a very short but powerful meditation that drew tears. I felt good in the end though. It works for me. I just have to overcome my resistance. And the only way I can do that is by… doing it.

I went to donate blood today and when they went to do that pin prick test to my finger the lady asked me when my last period was and when I told her she looked doubtful that my iron count would be high enough to donate.

And in my mind I was like, My iron is always high enough! I had steak for breakfast! Stupid menstruation won’t stop me from giving blood!

And then she did the test and my iron count was too low. It’s never happened to me before. I felt like such a failure…

Now I’m craving onion rings. Wtf is wrong with me.
