Even though I really only get one day off a week these days I still feel guilty about staying in bed and relaxing. I keep feeling like I should get into the studio and do something.
I’ve decided instead to catch up on The Great British Bake Off (and any other tv shows that will keep me here). I think I may also give the farmer’s market a rest next Saturday as well since the sales this week were abysmal, as September sales generally tend to be. I’ve been doing well enough with posting my pieces online and getting sales through that. So really it’s just a matter of making more pieces faster I suppose.
Jesus it’s like I can never stop thinking about work.
All of the Blackman clan is freaking amazing tbh. Marge, Nehilet and Isaac are my three faves. I know Nailah is the most popular one in the mainstream now too. Bottom line: Shorty I’s genes real strong jed lol
They are actually, ALL amazing. Have you ever been to the festival at their ranch? It’s fantastic
Right? I first heard her perform it at New Fire Festival. Tonight we were at my friend Rohan’s store and there were maybe 15 of us in that room while she was singing. It was so amazing. She has such a beautiful voice.
I wanted to share this video and song with you all. It’s by the beautiful Marge Blackman, a member of Trinidad’s most famous musical family.
I just came from a get together where I was lucky enough to be present to her performing several of her songs in a very intimate space. She has the kind of music that gives me goosebumps.
It is beautiful and uplifting and positive. Please enjoy.
The lady who makes the lotions and soaps just gave me some cocoa nibs and asked me to make a pair of resin earrings with them. They’re quite delicious. I have enough to make earrings and eat the rest. Heh.
There’s this couple at the market who sell body lotions and soaps that they make.
The husband does most of the talking to customers. And he’s always telling people that one of his lotions is great for removing marks on the body (which it might be) except he always mentions stretch marks in his list of things it can remove and I always want to scream at him and tell him that nothing can remove stretch marks. Diminish them sure. But erase? Not a chance.
Getting my stock together for tomorrow. These pieces will be available at the Green Market in Santa Cruz. See you there! @greenmarketsantacruz .

I just heard an ad on the radio from an optical place and they used the word “spectacles” like we were still wearing corsets and recovering from the vapors.
I went into my studio today to make some resin pieces. I decided to try out a new brand of resin I bought that got really good reviews. Mistake. It’s way too thick and sets up too quickly compared to my regular brand. Now I’m pissed at myself for buying it cause I have to use it all up.
Also, resin is really hard to clean off. And I don’t know why but I have a habit of removing my damn gloves and getting it all over my hands and then I’m sticky for the rest of the damn day.
It is really hurting me to see the pictures coming out of my fellow Caribbean islands after Hurricane Irma. My heart feels so heavy. I am praying somehow it loses strength before it hits Miami.
Guys, the first images of Irma’s level of devastation are coming out of Barbuda and it’s heartbreaking. The President of Barbuda says that 90% of the island is uninhabitable, upwards of 60% of the TOTAL population are now homeless because the hurricane destroyed virtually every building and home on the island, and that the estimated damage is valued at no less than $200 million dollars. That’s money a small island like that doesn’t have. They’re saying it’s going to take years to rebuild and Hurricane Jose is right behind Irma on the same path which means they could be hit twice. This is just one of the islands being affected.
Please, show up for the Caribbean like you did for Houston. There is no safety net for any of these islands including mine. They’ll rely entirely on foreign aid. Find local charities or global trustworthy charities (NOT the Red Cross) and make a donation asking them to aid the Caribbean. There’s whole countries being turned into rubble with no financial means to repair their infrastructures. They’re going to need help.
TIPS FOR HURRICANE IRMA. STAY SAFE MY FLORIDA FRIENDS! Gas prices are already up to $3 and water is hard to find until new deliveries come in. I have to drive much farther out for supplies.
I just got off the phone with my girlfriend Alannah.
We’ve known each other for a few years but we’ve only become close relatively recently.
Like me, she’s someone who has had difficulties with female friendships.
She travels a lot for work, so we don’t see each other often, but even when she’s away she’ll call me and we’ll spend a couple of hours on the phone.
I feel tremendously grateful to have found a kindred spirit in another woman again. I’ve always had a lot of male friends but there is nothing like the closeness of a female friendship. We just speak the same language. It always feels like coming home.
People are the worst! My friend that sells clothes has had the same request. WTF are these people thinking??
I honestly do not know the answer to that. Also the person in question was enquiring about a piece of resin jewelry. It’s not fine jewelry so sending it through the mail is not a risky thing. At worst it will get lost and I will just send another one (which rarely ever happens with registered mail). If it’s urgent and they absolutely need me to hand deliver it they should offer to pay for my time.
I can’t even imagine suggesting it. I’d add a bigger charge for gas money than I would shipping!
Not to mention that the traffic situation in Trinidad is horrible so unless they’re right down the road there’s not way I’m hand delivering anything. This is not pizza.
I looked over her comment and what she had actually said was “I wish you did deliveries <3″ so I erased the post because I didn’t want to misrepresent the situation. HOWEVER you’re correct. And I did respond by saying “I do. Via TTPost.” Because I mail orders all over the world. And they arrive safely. So if someone doesn’t want to receive jewelry through that mail that’s on them. It’s ridiculous that people would expect me to drive to their door to drop off their orders.
I realised after I posted these rings last night they came out looking way more purple than indigo. These are pictures of the same rings with the correct colours. I just want to make sure everyone who expressed an interest in ordering saw the correct colour. 💗. .

She might not have them listed just yet. You can try contacting her directly via her personal Tumblr on here at @soulsistrin 🙂
Thanks guys no they’re not listed there, I’m launching a new shop for them but feel free to DM me here or you can email me at info@sundarajewelry.com if you’re interested in ordering anything you see!
I’m going to be creating a new Etsy shop for my resin jewelry, under a new name as it doesn’t really go with my current line of jewelry.
It’s taking more time to get it up and running than I anticipated.
I have a logo design but I want to redo it (cause as a graphic designer I can never be satisfied). Plus I’ve just been so busy making pieces I haven’t had time to photograph and list everything I’ve been making.
Setting up a new shop is exhausting. I’m gonna go work on that logo tonight though as it’s a sticking point and I really need to get that done. I can’t do any branding until I get that out of the way. And branding comes first.
I collected some beautiful bougainvillea petals this morning. I put them to press and dry. Hopefully in two weeks they will be ready for me to make something beautiful out of them. Fingers crossed!
I walked to a deli and got a sandwich to go and a coffee and while I was waiting these two teenage girls ran up and were like OH MY GOD JESSICA HOW ARE YOU and then hugged me and the one whispered “that guy was following you and taking pictures of you” and then they walked home with me and that one guy stopped following me and hONESTLY THIS IS WHAT I AM HERE FOR
Y’all I was at the river just hanging with my friend and these two high school girls run up to us and say “Can you pretend to be our friends? Cause this guy has been following us,” and we sat with them and they called their parents to pick them up and I really want to share that story cause it’s SO SMART and when you’re in crisis your mind can just blank in panic so I want everyone to have that story in the back of their heads. NEVER be afraid to ask strangers for protection!
Once in like ninth grade, I was at Starbucks by myself doing homework and this weirdo came and sat at my table and was telling me how he was a photographer and how he was “scouting” for models and he really liked my “look” and he was trying to ask my name and how old I was and I was panicking bc I didn’t know what to do Then this middle aged woman came up to us and was like “EMILY there you are sweetie I was looking for you it’s time to go home!” and the guy left really awkwardly and then she told me that she had a daughter my age and asked if I told him my name and I said no and she told me to be safe Keep an eye out. Protect each other
why do men have to be so goddamn creepy like shit dude
FOREVER REBLOG
We tell our kids to look for the families, the moms, the dads playing with their kids.
But I’m in a position where I often have to ask random strangers for a moment of help, and I will tell you… 99 times out of 100, people are delighted to help.
(I use an electric cart to shop, and it’s often easier to ask the person standing between me and the shelf to hand me what’s in front of them than it is to wait for them to move, etc. etc. and then they’re embarrassed that they were in the way, etc. People are pretty much invariably kind.)
My husband was coming off the bus reading a book and a woman fell in next to him and said, “Will you walk me to the store over there?” (100 feet away).
He said, “Sure!” and then he realized some guy was yelling racial insults at her. He walked her to the store.
When you are in public, you are not alone. But the trick is not to yell, “Will somebody help me” but to look someone in the eye and say, “Will you please help me?”
Here’s the secret:
People like being asked and want to help, especially if the thing being asked is small to them and large to the person they’re helping.
Continuing the celebration of the photographer’s birthday today, a selection of Carl Van Vechten’s brilliant color portraits of African American performers: Billie Holiday, Geoffrey Holder, Pearl Bailey, Carmen De Lavallade, Ella Fitzgerald, Joyce Bryant, Harry Belafonte, Ethel Waters, James Earl Jones, and Blanche Dunn.
I got some new supplies in the mail today. Some of them ring molds. So tomorrow I’m gonna head into the studio and experiment with making some resin rings.
It’s supposed to be my day off but I’m too excited to relax. When work feels like play… 😀
I wrote the date out on a receipt for a customer this morning and sighed with relief at the visible evidence that I was no longer in the month of August.
Last month was one of the worst months I’ve had in a really long time. Every manner of problem that could arise did. I have been stressed to a point of wanting to break.
Judging from my sales today at least the financial drought seems to have ended. Once that horrible retrograde is over hopefully other things will balance themselves out. I never used to believe in astrology but my life seems to fall into disarray every time there’s a retrograde. This has been no exception.
Also my favourite juice guy isn’t here today and I’m parched and will be forced to buy from that overpriced lady over there. He makes smoothies for $25 and she sells a cup of juice without ice for $20. I’m gonna give him a good talking to next week. I mean he even delivers to my table when I can’t wait. He’s so nice.
There are two kids at the market today that look like Hitler Youth.
I don’t meant to be derogatory but we don’t get lots of blue eyed blond haired people in Trinidad and their hairstyles look like something straight out of a third reich propaganda newsreel.
me trying to get comfortable in my covers at night
thats the kind of thing i would love to just have in a little jar on my shelf so that when people came over they would be really unnerved by the mysterious shifting blob i have in a flask and i would refuse to acknowledge its existence
Trauma shatters your most basic assumptions about yourself and your world – “Life is good,” “I’m safe,” “People are kind,” “I can trust others,” “The future is likely to be good” – and replaces them with feelings like “The world is dangerous,” “I can’t win,”“I can’t trust other people …”
I’ve had a bottle of linseed oil left over from that brief moment I tried to take up oil painting. For some reason I keep it in my container of stuff-I-use-all-the-time, even though I haven’t opened it in literally 20 years.
But yesterday while sanding a pine and resin pendant I realised I needed something to polish up the wood and dug up the linseed oil. It turned out it was just the thing.
Anyhow there’s no real moral to this story other than that I throw out everything except art supplies because they are expensive AF and I am always convinced they will come in handy again some day and usually the do. Even if someday is 20 years later.
Finally finished this piece today, one of three resin and #pine wood pendants. For a first try I’m very happy with them 😊💗. .

Today I was sanding some tiny little resin spheres (16mm) for earrings. I made six, two pairs. They kept flying out my hands because of the friction with the sanding wheel.
I lost one and I can’t find it. So two pairs of earrings for now 😦
shoutout to everyone making progress that no one recognized because you never let anyone see your darkest moments. i see you and i am so, so proud of every little step you’re making in the right direction.
This shot is dedicated to my grandma who thinks i should live a little more on the edge. Thanks for tuning into my blog everyday to see what new stuff i have up. Love you Grandma

Let’s do this!
Pick a number. Cure my boredom. Not guaranteed to cure yours.
Even when people don’t buy my stuff, they are so incredibly complimentary and encouraging of what I’m doing. It really warms my heart. I meet so many really wonderful people through making and selling jewelry.
James Cameron can truly GTFO with this “Wonder Woman is just a product of male Hollywood” crap. He is the literal epitome of male Hollywood as a freaking MALE DIRECTOR. The fact that he sees absolutely no irony in being like “no you dumb woman, I, a man can write better female characters than you” is absolutely beyond words.
Between Cameron and Whedon I just don’t get the obsession with women having to be ‘broken’/traumatized (usually in a really sexual, degrading way) to justify them being “empowered” and badass.
Apparently women can’t be born strong. We must be made that way
The son of the owner of the house is a drug dealer. Everybody knows he’s a drug dealer. He’s been doing it for years.
It’s a nice neighbourhood. No one likes what he’s doing. But at this point, his customers drive up, pick up their weed and leave.
Gone are the days when he used to have all kinds of degenerates over at the house, smoking crack, getting into fights where police had to be called. Things are quiet. Judging by the cars his clients are upscale. So everybody looks the other way and deals with the occasional contact high.
So every now and then the police make a feeble attempt at catching him at something illegal. But you can’t search a house (that honestly looks like a junk yard) for drugs without a dog. So they go hunting through the yard, through the house, lazily trying to find some evidence of wrongdoing, and then they leave.
The only difference today was that they carried off one of his friends in handcuffs. Maybe he had a joint on him. Son wasn’t even home. They could save their time and money if they’d just decriminalize marijuana. But that would make sense. And this is Trinidad. So once more, an exercise in futility that resulted in nothing. Like I said, this is Trinidad.
