The fact that the location of the world’s oldest tree has to be kept secret encapsulates everything that’s bad about humanity.

There’s a story about that, actually.

According to the smithsonianmag.com, the world’s oldest bristlecone pine was a nearly 5,000 year old tree later named Prometheus. In 1964, a man named Donald Rusk Currey decided to use an increment borer to determine its age (a process that cuts a small hole into the center of the tree trunk, and is not intended to kill the tree). Unfortunately, the borer got stuck. He and a park ranger cut the tree down to remove the equipment, and when they counted the tree rings, they realized their mistake. Oops. This incident lead to better protection of the remaining bristlecone pines.

There’s some wiggle room about what can be called “the world’s oldest living tree.” The world’s oldest living single tree is the tree that the OP is referring to. Its name is Methuselah, and it is also around 5,000 years old. Since its location is unknown, nobody knows what it looks like. But it might be this tree here:

But technically, it isn’t the oldest living tree. Let me explain.

It turns out that root systems of trees can send up genetically identical saplings (aka clones) via their root systems. Like so:

Which means the original trunk can die, but since the root system is attached to other trees which give it nutrients, it lives on. The root system can theoretically do this indefinitely. So the tree trunks could be fairly young, but the roots could be large and very, very, very old. So the oldest “tree” isn’t a small grove, it’s a logic-defying forest.

I’d like you to meet Pando.

This male quaking aspen covers 106 acres and is ancient. I’m talking an estimate of 80,000 years. The trees you can see are just “shoots” he sent up, and their average age is 130 years old. He is his own forest. If trees could talk, I’d love to hear what he had to say.

He might be dying, due to insects and drought (hmm, wonder what could have happened to cause that). A section of Pando is being studied in an attempt to find a solution. But in the meantime, we can enjoy him for his beauty.

TLDR: Yes please, protect the trees from humans!

When I was a kid I thought white sugar was a white people thing and brown sugar was, well what brown people used. I just thought white people didn’t know any better, cause everything tastes better with brown sugar and we only ever use it for like baking or whatever. But I just figured white people stuck with their kind (of sugar).

I thought I read some ugly stuff on the internet, but I’ve yet to come across anyone who defends Manson (by accident I have found some who defend Hitler). There are some very sick people out there.

I guess if you’re anti-semitic you can defend Hitler in some weird way I suppose… but I can’t really find there’s much rhetoric behind Manson that someone could hold onto as a defense… so having some kind of pity on him just strikes me as really lacking in any kind of compassion for his victims, not to mention a serious lack of examination of the entire situation that went down.

I get super impressed by the quality of the photos my iphone takes man. I mean these are tiny little rings. I used a macro lens to do close ups, but even without it these pictures were really impressive.

Usually Black hair is excluded in the hair tutorials which I have seen so I have gone through it in depth because it’s really not enough to tell someone simply, “Black hair is really curly, draw it really curly.”

The next part of Black Hair In Depth will feature styles and ideas for designing characters and I will release it around February. If you would like to see certain styles, please shoot me a message!

How can your argument be that Manson couldn’t be that bad because “he personally didn’t do it”?

Hitler didn’t personally fucking kill anybody either… like… this man ordered the slaughter of a woman who was 8 months pregnant. You want to get upset cause we’re celebrating an old man’s death? He wasn’t some benign old man. Jesus get a fucking clue

The way to love someone is to lightly run your finger over that person’s soul until you find a crack – and then gently pour your love into that crack.

I woke up this morning and for the first time in two weeks I actually didn’t feel like shit. I wasn’t feeling sick, didn’t have a headache, and slept well and felt rested. I can get back into the studio now and catch up on all the work I’ve been missing. Nice. Finally.

It is very sad to me that some people are so intent on leaving their mark on the world that they don’t care if that mark is a scar.

John Green (via aboonoor)

Of course I look angry all the time. My entire life I’ve been fighting a war. I am soaked in pain and sadness. The irony however, is that I’m not actually angry, I’m trying to learn how to be happy. And that in itself is a war…

thedemonkings  // The War

I finally got around to making that goat’s cheese tonight. It was actually kinda meh. I guess I expected it to be wildly different from the cow’s cheese I’ve made but it didn’t really taste all that different which is weird cause when you buy it in the store it does. Also I put a little too much salt in it. But it was ok I had it on some crackers with some honey and it tasted really good. But I don’t think I’m gonna make it again. I’m gonna try my hand at some mozzarella next time.

We went to see Thor Ragnarok yesterday and twice the movie got all glitchy until finally they told us to go get a refund or watch another movie. I think we were about halfway through, maybe more and I wasn’t in the mood to watch something new, so we went home and watched that new Netflix movie Mudbound instead. I thought it was really good. And female directed by Dee Rees. She also directed Pariah and Bessie, both of which I’ve seen and enjoyed a great deal. I’d definitely recommend it if any of you were thinking of watching it.

I barely slept a wink last night due to an upset stomach and heartburn. Of course I feel perfectly fine now. So I’m trying to decide if to try to get some sleep or just soldier through.

Right now I’m thinking sleep.

I’m up at 2am with heartburn and I just read that Charles Manson died. That seems appropriate somehow.

things to do

I bought chickpeas to make hummus. It’s still sitting there.

I got some goat’s milk because I wanted to try my hand at making some goat cheese this time. That’s still there, and I’m hoping it hasn’t gone bad cause it wasn’t cheap.

And I got some new flowers and loose flower petals to press. I pressed a few, the rest are still in the fridge.

So it seems that this week I haven’t been doing a great job at completing my projects.

To be fair I’ve been feeling sick for the past two weeks. But I am usually good about powering through. This time I think I just ran out of steam. I am not superwoman, I need a rest sometimes too. I’ve had it now I just need to get my mind back in gear.

But not today. We’re going to watch the new Thor movie.

Hey guys so my new business blog is up… I only really have one post right now just an intro, but I’ll be posting more soon. I’d really appreciate it if you’d just click over and subscribe. Thanks much! www.sundarablog.com

I was creating some automated email forms for my blog… you know the kinds that say thanks for subscribing or whatever.

And I was doing one that was a thanks for getting in touch, we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. And I SO wanted to put this image in the email:

but I decided to restrain myself and but something more appropriate less political instead.

I gave up on using WordPress for my business blog. It’s way too advanced for me and the learning curve too steep. I don’t know how to code. I went with Wix instead and created exactly what I wanted. The site is still going offline a bit (it takes up to 48 hours to connect) so I’ll post a link when it’s up for good.

Sitting here crying over the Project Runway finale.

I’m actually really happy with the person who they picked as the winner. Their collection was amazing (notice the gender neutral pronouns? haha). Truthfully everyone’s was though. It was one of the best finales I’ve ever seen.

I also can’t wait for the reunion show. Looks like fur gonna fly.

I disagree… I’ve bought gold-filled/plated things that I thought would be fine that I found out later I was allergic to. I try to stick to solid gold/sterling but since they are expensive sometimes I branch out – sometimes I’m ok and sometimes I break out in a rash.

Well fair enough but that wasn’t why they asked for it… And I can’t see how you can test durability and longevity of a finished piece of jewelry by a piece of wire. That tells you nothing.

Someone just asked me to send them a sample of the metal I use to make a ring. I’m so confused. I don’t understand what that’s supposed to accomplish. I already gave them the dimensions of the wire. I have a photo of the finished product. It’s literally the strangest request I’ve ever received. And no sorry can’t (won’t) do it.

On May 28th, my sister, Edna, turned 31.

image

Her mental age is about three years old. She loves Winnie the Pooh, Beauty & the Beast, and Sesame Street. Even though the below picture is unconvincing.

image

Edna and “Cookie.” I think she was trying to play it cool.

My name is Jeanie. I’m Edna’s younger sister. I’m also her guardian and caregiver.

image

That’s me on the left. (Hey, you never know. After a year of writing a blog about online dating – Jeanie Does the Internet – I’ve come to learn that there are A LOT of fools on the internet.)

image

ANYWAY, I’m not “doing the internet” anymore. I’m taking care of Edna full-time, after completing my MFA in Writing for Screen & Television at USC.

image

May 16, 2014. I wanted a picture. Edna wanted breakfast.

In case you’re wondering where our parents are, they’re dead. Our mom died of breast cancer when she was just 33.

image

Us with mom before she died. (Obviously.)

As for our dad, he peaced-out around the time my mom got sick. His loss – we’re awesome.

image

Here we are being awesome at the beach. Pushing a wheelchair in the sand? Not so awesome.

In case you’re wondering “What’s wrong?” with my sister – as a stranger once asked me on the street  –  NOTHING. Yes, Edna has a rare form of epilepsy – Lennox-Gastaut syndrome – but I don’t know if that’s anymore “wrong” than people who don’t have manners.

Basically, Edna was born “normal,” and started having seizures as a baby. They eventually got so bad that they cut off the oxygen to her brain, causing her to be mentally disabled. Or impaired. Or intellectually disabled. Or whatever you want to call it – except “retarded,” because in 2010, President Obama signed Rosa’s Law into effect, replacing that word with “intellectually impaired.”

Which is cool and all, but services for the disabled and the people who care for them are SEVERELY LACKING. Also, there’s a bunch of people working in taxpayer-funded positions who are supposed to help families like us, but don’t. (Big surprise, I know.) They just fill out paperwork (whenever they feel like it) with asinine statements like this:

image

YUP. I transport my sister down the stairs in her wheelchair, because that is not only safe, but TOTALLY PRACTICAL. Why doesn’t everyone in a wheelchair just take the stairs, for God’s sake? Stop being so lazy, PEOPLE WITHOUT WORKING LEGS!

But, as it says above, Edna’s legs do work. Whether or not she wants them to, is another story.

image

Edna refusing to go inside.

These are the stairs that I have to carry her up – by myself – on a daily basis. That is, until one of my legs break and both of us are just sitting at the bottom of the stairs, helpless.

image

For six months, I have begged – BEGGED – the State of California to help my sister, which they are required by law – The Lanterman Act specifically – to do so. But they’ve told me “these things take time” and that I “need to amend my expectations.” (That was said to me when I refused to place Edna at AN ALL-MALE CARE FACILITY. Because yes, that was an “option” that was offered to me.)

Prior to Edna moving in with me in my one-bedroom apartment, she was living with her amazing caregiver, Gaby, back in Tucson, where we went to high school and I did my undergrad. Edna’s reppin’ the Wildcats below.

image

But back in November, Gaby also died from breast cancer. (FUCK YOU, BREAST CANCER!) This picture was taken a month before she died. She never even told me she was sick because she didn’t want me to worry.

By the way, we were raised by our grandma. Edna and her were very close.

image

She’s dead, too. Surprise.

She died when I was 20 and Edna was 21. That’s when I became Edna’s legal guardian and Gaby stepped into the picture to help me out with Edna.

So, six months ago, after Gaby died, I moved Edna to California, where I tried to get the folks over at The Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center to help me. I’ve told them I’m worried about our safety – that one of us could get hurt on the stairs –  I’ve told them I can’t afford to pay the private babysitters $15/hour because the ones social services sent me who make $9/hour were unreliable (they didn’t show up on time or at all so I could get to school and work), untrustworthy (one of them let Edna go to the bathroom in the kitchen and then took her into the bathroom because “that what I thought I was supposed to do.”)

But the people over at the FLRC don’t return my calls, they don’t file the paperwork on time – and the first caseworker that was assigned to us actually LAUGHED AT my sister when he came to our home to evaluate her. When I reported him to his supervisor, she told me, “That’s just [insert name of said jackass].”

He was one of the two caseworkers that contributed to the report I mentioned above, which also included this:

image

So let me get this straight – I have to feed, bathe, dress and help Edna in the bathroom and you can’t deduce whether or not she is able to vote? What in the fuck?!

Now I realize I seem angry. And you can bet your balls I am. I’m also sad. Sad for those who don’t have family to stick up from them and who waste away God knows where, monitored by no one. Or monitored by people who physically and sexually assault them

I’m also sad for the caregivers who are SO EXHAUSTED – trying to take care of their loved ones – while also trying to take care of themselves and battling a system that is supposed to help, but does nothing of the sort. And I know a lot of people give up. They let their dreams, their marriages, their friendships slide. All while trying not to resent the very person you’re doing it all for.

image

Edna wanted to sit next to me the other day while I was writing. Clearly, she’s not impressed.

Here’s the thing: I REFUSE TO GIVE UP. I’M NOT GIVING UP ON HER OR MYSELF. I’m going to pursue my dreams while taking care of her, AND while ensuring that the people paid to do their jobs ACTUALLY do them.

That’s where you come in. I need you to help me get my story out there. Because I know I’m not alone in this. I want to connect with families who are in similar situations and also show people who have no idea what it’s like to care for someone with a disability (or even a loved one who is sick) that it can be rewarding. Super fucking hard. Exhausting. Painful. Isolating. But, rewarding.

I’m going to get help for my sister – and others. My hope is that by sharing our story, I can bring awareness to the lack of services and help for the disabled.

Thank you,

Jeanie

STOP SCROLLING. THIS PERSON ISN’T ASKING FOR MONEY AND THIS POST WON’T MAKE YOU SAD.

This is a really uplifting and inspirational story of a family sticking by each other and making things work despite a whole lot of shit

They just want to find other people in the same position they are, for a sense of community and to feel like they aren’t alone.

I know out of all of you, some of you have followers who are living with and taking care of intellectually or emotionally disabled family members, and this lovely and unbreakable pair of sisters need to find them.

SIGNAL BOOOOOOOOOST

Repost! This story needs told!

Disabled lives matter. Sooo much.

Will always reblog this.

As someone who tries to assist parents advocate for their children with autism in dealing with the Regional Center bureaucracy, I can tell you, it’s a nightmare of people that are clueless, helpless, and hopeless. The parents and caregivers that crack the system are dauntless warriors.

My Parents are Dead and My Sister is Disabled

Waiting on a document the other day and I strike up a conversation with the woman on the bench in front of me. We’re just talking shit to pass the time and the woman on the bench in front of her is listening and laughing at everything we say but not turning around once to watch us.

So in a lull in the conversation this woman walks into the building with bright blonde and platinum hair. She is dark and the hair looks like literal straw and it’s all you can see in the whole room it looks so awful, and the woman on the bench in front of me turns and looks at me like

and I swear to god the woman on the bench in front of her heard her because she just started laughing, which set us off as well. Not a word was exchanged but the three of us were sitting in the middle of family court cracking up while everyone else looked on. It was a bonding moment.

Yesterday when I went to the flower shop to buy the orchids they sent me in the back to speak to Michael. We immediately hit it off in a gay florist and artist who works with flowers kind of way. He told me to come back the next day when they would have new stock. I’m going tomorrow instead so I can show him what I made. He was really interested in what I was describing and gave me a discount to boot, so I want him to see what I made from the lovely flowers picked out for me. I’m excited to see his reaction.

I’ve just been unbelievably tired lately. Part of it (last week at least) was hormones. This week it’s just been the product of being one person running a business and having to have too many balls in the air. I need an intern for this time of the year to do shit so I can just focus on making pretty things. Every night I get in bed so exhausted I can’t even fall asleep. This is why I’m scrolling tumblr at 11pm trying to get rid of a(nother yet again) headache.

another weird thing about beer is that it has weird masculinity connections to it. “ya i’ll get a beer, i don’t want none of them girly drinks” Jimothy, you’re drinking wheat juice with a 5% alcohol content and my mixed, fruity, “girly” drink is 40% alcohol and tastes great

O.KAY *CRACKS KNUCKLES* I AM ABOUT TO GIVE YOU AN EDUCATION

BEER IS TRADITIONALLY A WOMAN’S DRINK, IT IS THE MOST FEMALE OF ALL OF THE DRINKS. FOR THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF YEARS, BEER WAS MADE AT HOME BY WOMEN, TO BE CONSUMED BY WOMEN AND CHILDREN–IT WAS ACTUALLY A SOURCE OF NUTRIENTS FOR MANY HOUSEHOLDS. WOMEN CREATED THE CRAFT OF BEER, AND FOR MOST OF HUMAN HISTORY THAT IS WHO YOU’D BUY IT FROM: MANY WOMEN MADE ADDITIONAL INCOME BY BREWING AND SELLING BEER FROM HOME. IT WASN’T UNTIL THE ERA OF INDUSTRIALIZATION THAT BEER BEGAN TO BE BREWED IN FACTORIES. AND ONCE BEER WAS BEING BREWED ON A LARGE SCALE, IT MADE TO START MARKETING IT TO ALL THE MALE FACTORY WORKERS WHO SUDDENLY HAD EXTRA INCOME. HENCE AN AGGRESSIVE MARKETING CAMPAIGN TO RE-BRAND BEER, A DRINK INTRINSICALLY TIED WITH WOMEN’S HISTORY, AS A ‘MASCULINE’ BEVERAGE.

EVEN BETTER, FEMALE BREWSTERS WERE THE ORIGINAL WICKED OLD WITCH. THE TROPES WE COMMONLY ASSOCIATE WITH STEREOTYPICAL WITCHES ARE ACTUALLY BASED ON THE TRADITIONAL BREWSTER. CAULDRONS & HOT STEAMING POTIONS = BEER BREWING. THE WITCH’S HAT: BELIEVE IT OR NOT POINTY HATS WERE ACTUALLY WORN BY BREWSTERS WHEN SELLING THEIR PRODUCT AT MARKETS: THE ENORMOUS HEADGEAR HELPED THEM STAND OUT, AND CLEARLY TOLD EVERYONE ‘YO MOTHERFUCKA GET YOUR BEER HERE’.

CATS AS FAMILIARS: CATS WERE COMMONLY USED TO PREVENT RODENTS FROM GETTING INTO THE WHEAT. EVEN THE BROOMSTICK IS RELATED TO BEER: A BUNDLE OF TWIGS RESEMBLING A BROOM WAS USED AS AD FOR ALEHOUSES

so basically, beer is the ultimate woman’s and witch’s drink

That’s right: Civilization was invented by women. For beer.

It happens I’d say about 50% of the time that when I go out someone tells me that I look like someone they know. They’ll ask me where I’m from or if I’m related to a certain person. It’s so weird. This never used to happen to me before but now for the past few years it’s all the time. Do I look common (for Trinidad of course)?

Childbirth is arguably the most traumatic event the human body can undergo, and new imaging techniques show that up to 15% of women sustain pelvic injuries that don’t heal…

“If an athlete sustained a similar injury in the field, she’d be in an MRI machine in an instant,” said Janis Miller, associate professor at the U-M School of Nursing. “We have this thing where we tell women, ‘Well, you’re 6 weeks postpartum and now we don’t need to see you—you’ll be fine.’ But not all women feel fine after 6 weeks nor are ready to go back to work, and they aren’t crazy.”

Researchers found that women can take 8 months or longer to heal from pelvic injuries sustained during childbirth…

Miller said, “A woman may have bladder problems, and in some cases prolapse of organs if the pelvic muscles are not functioning well enough to hold them in place.”

She and a team of midwives, radiologists and obstetricians studied a group of pregnant women at high risk for pelvic muscle tears, and used MRI to diagnose injury and track healing time…

25% of women showed fluid in the pubic bone marrow or sustained fractures similar to a sports-related stress fracture, and 2/3 showed excess fluid in the muscle, which indicates injury similar to a severe muscle strain. 41% sustained pelvic muscle tears, with the muscle detaching partially or fully from the pubic bone.

TW for sexual harassment

“Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot is continuing to battle accused Hollywood sexual harasser Brett Ratner by refusing to sign for a superhero sequel unless the movie-maker is completely killed from the franchise.

A Hollywood source tells Page Six that Gadot — who last month backed out of a dinner honoring Ratner, where she was due to present him with an award — is taking a strong stance on sexual harassment in Hollywood and doesn’t want her hit “Wonder Woman” franchise to benefit a man accused of sexual misconduct.

Ratner’s production company RatPac-Dune Entertainment helped produce “Wonder Woman” as part of its co-financing deal with Warner Bros. The movie has grossed more than $400 million internationally, and Ratner’s company will take a healthy share of the profits. A Warner Bros. insider explained, “Brett made a lot of money from the success of ‘Wonder Woman,’ thanks to his company having helped finance the first movie. Now Gadot is saying she won’t sign for the sequel unless Warner Bros. buys Brett out [of his financing deal] and gets rid of him.”

The reason you need to buy eyeglasses from online retailers like Zenni Optical

80% of the eyeglasses in the world are made by Luxotica, that’s right, no matter the brand name, the source is the same, but not only do Luxottica make the frames, they make the lenses, they own the stores, they even own the largest eye insurance company, Eye Med – which is why they can charge you 400$ for a pair of glasses that costs maybe $20

75% of people who purchase eyeglasses need them out of medical necessity (as I do) so I went and tried the online shop Zenni Optical, and was able to buy no line bifocals with UV coating for less than $70, when LensCrafters wanted to sell me a pair for $550 – and that’s WITH insurance!

Nicest thing about Zenni? You can upload a photo of yourself to try on glasses, and if you don’t like them – YOU CAN RETURN THEM for credit! This is because you don’t need to gouge your customer to make money, glasses really cost only pennies to make. Now I can buy a couple of pairs, and have choices in what I wear, rather than investing hundreds of dollars – sometimes for quality that sucks.

Regardless of whom you buy from, don’t feed Luxottica any more.

Does this apply to countries outside of the US? And if so does anyone have any links to international glasses stores?

Probably also applies to countries outside of US, Luxottica is Italian, and French lensmaker Essilor has agreed to buy Luxottica in a bid to create a new global giant in the sector. The combined group will have a market capitalization of around 46.2 billion euros ($49 billion), based on both companies’ closing share prices on Friday.

just google online eyeglasses and you’ll find plenty of links.

Zenni is international! I’ve been buying my glasses there now for years and I’ve never had any issues. Not with fit, not with lenses, not with breaks – nothing.

I have a strong, difficult prescription and was regularly paying upwards of $700AUD every two years for a single pair of glasses. I bought my current pair of glasses a couple years ago from Zenni and guess how much I spent?

…$7. In total. Frames and lenses. And they are singularly the best glasses I’ve ever had. I wear my glasses every waking hour of my life and these babies have not just survived but they look almost as good as when I first received them.

And because they are so cheap I also have a pair of sunglasses, and TWO pairs of alternative glasses I can wear when the mood strikes me. Since then my mom AND my dad, my uncle, and my cousin have all started to buy from Zenni.

BUY YOUR GLASSES FROM ZENNI! I cannot stress this enough. If you’re paying retail then you’re being ripped off.

I’ve reblogged this before and Ima reblog it again…

Zenni ain’t the only place out there. In fact I shopped there first then found other’s I liked better. I primarily buy off Eyebuydirect but I have also shopped at coastal and Zenni. Eyebuydirect has been overall my favorite. There prices are in the same price bracket as Zenni which is like $12-$80 for frames and where as zenni you can get lenses for free Eyebuydirect the lenses I think are like $14-18

but the quality of the glasses I have gotten from Eyebuydirect felt far superior to those I got from zenni, Eyebuydirect also has great customer service. Basically please look around the internet. Like just cause glasses are fucking awesome and deserve to be a fashion statement as well as a need.

I am currently wearing a pair of glasses from eyebuydirect that I paid a little over $100 I  got frames that where $35 and I got those fancy blue coated lenses that help protect your eyes against looking at screens for extended time (I get way less headaches with them!) those lenses where a bit pricier.

but. in comparison, last I checked in at walmart (fucking walmart.) my lenses alone base cost would of been $140 that’s just the stupid glass discs not even the frames.

For later reading – eveyone in the house needs new glasses and spares.

maybe i didn’t read the post clearly enough, but how do they test you for your prescription if its all online??

You do need to get a prescription from an optometrist, that you can’t avoid, however you don’t have to buy the eyeglasses from your optometrist, some don’t like that because that’s where they make their money – others are paid salary by their stores so they don’t care. Part of the prescription is the pupillary distance, and you’ve paid for that, so they have to give it to you. If they still don’t, Zenni has a ruler you can print out, so you can figure it out yourself.

Also, if you eyeglasses are not correct (I have no line bifocals and those can be an issue, though I’ve never had them with Zenni) you just send them back no charge to get re-made, or send them back for a refund. You don’t lose anything for trying except time.

I have posted about Zenni and about online eyeglasses before (and I’m thrilled to hear about another company).

Do not buy your eyeglasses from a retailer who is going to charge you a hundred dollars when you can get them online for under 25.

I have gotten glasses from Zenni since 2013, and at this point I’ve probably saved thousands of dollars with how terrible my eyes are and how expensive my lenses turn out in stores.

I got my new glasses from Warby Parker online. The frames I’d looked at at my optometrist were going to run me $250+ AFTER INSURANCE

Warby Parker’s are all $95 flat rate. Even without insurance they would have been cheaper than anything offered by my optometrist. And they’re just as good.

I’ve had good experiences with Zennioptical. Great customization options. Basic lenses are free with frame. I usually pay extra for the computer glare-reduction lens coating, and the ultra thin lenses, because I have a really strong prescription and I don’t want really heavy thick lenses weighing on my face all day long.

For sunglasses you can get tints, gradient tints, & mirror lenses in your choice of a variety of colors. I got myself a gorgeous prescription pair of goldtone stainless steel aviators w/ green mirror lenses at the beginning of the summer.

DO read the product reviews, and don’t buy a frame that has no product reviews. The first pair I bought had a really flimsy frame that broke almost immediately – if only I’d read the product reviews I’d have known that. Luckily, they have a good refund policy, so I was able to replace it with a good, durable pair.

Yes! I use Zenni and I love them. I also just bought a glasses organizer case from Amazon because I now have 8 pairs of glasses that all are my current scrip (or close enough to it) so I can actually accessorize with them and that is amazing.

I generally buy one pair of glasses from my eyedoctor (insurance covers it, so it’s not that expensive for me) that is my “professional” pair and then I get fun pairs from Zenni. It’s a system that works well for me. I love love love my turquoise glasses… but I can’t really wear them for business meetings (ah, the joys of working in a conservative field…)

….. Why am I just hearing about this?

I had the same glasses for ALMOST A DECADE because I couldn’t afford new ones. My current pair I only got because my ex-husband finally got insurance through his new job and those were still give-me-anxiety-levels expensive. And now… you know… he’s my *ex.* So…. basically I’ve been prepared to never have new glasses again.

This is important.

This is important but please be aware if you have astigmatism the prices ARE NOT that low. No one talks about that when they praise these companies. They are lower, yes, but they are generally $100-200 more than the “flat rate” due to the way the lenses have to be made for those of us “blessed” with this specific eyesight affliction. And it’s true of all of these sources. I went with Warby Parker because they have stores in Chicago so I could try on first and have the help of an associate, which I desperately need due to how bad my eyesite is, I need help, and that cannot be replaced with a website. I tried Zenni once and the glasses were so garbage: cheap uncomfortable frames and the lenses hurt my eyes. Again, I️ have extremely poor vision and astigmatism. I hadn’t heard someone with my type of experience of these places, only praise, so please be aware they’re great for CERTAIN Eyes.

I have astigmatism in both eyes and I buy my glasses from Zenni. I’ve never paid more than $35 for a pair. However my vision is relatively good the above comment by may only apply to those with more severe vision issues. But my four pairs have all served me well.
