Did you know we have roadrunners in Trinidad? I didn’t until recently. They’re apparently very territorial (they think it’s their farm). There’s one in the background trying to warn Zam that he’s getting too close! #farm #trinidad

The Color Purple

My favorite movie is on, The Color Purple. I could watch this movie a million times. I probably have. Read the book about half as many.

I wonder why Whoopi Goldberg didn’t get her Oscar for this instead? Her performance was brilliant. The movie should have won best picture too. They got robbed.

I wouldn’t want to see a remake of it, but if they were to make this movie now, I think they’d be braver about including all the lesbian parts of the story. They barely hint at it in the movie, and when I first saw it I was so young it went right over my head so I didn’t even get that it was implied. I just thought Celie and Shug kissed and shrugged it off.

There were so many stellar performances in this film. It took me years to stop hating Danny Glover for his portrayal of Mister. I saw the woman who acted as the mayor’s wife in another role recently and I felt a vague distaste for her until I remembered why. Oprah herself was amazing in the role of Sophia. Watching it again just amazes me how she so perfectly inhabits her character.

It’s such a moving, beautiful book and the movie does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. It’s one of those movies that I will never not watch when it’s on.

It’s late enough for lunch but I haven’t had breakfast… I can’t decide what to eat.

Where’s my manservant? *claps twice* “Jeeves!”

spin cycle

In the past two weeeks, two acquaintances of mine who are my age have become grandmothers. I’m happy for them of course but like, is that where we are? It could happen to us. Chris’s oldest is about to turn 21.

I remember my father telling me on my 21st birthday that the way you feel inside doesn’t change. You’re always the same person you were when you were young. I totally didn’t believe him then because I couldn’t see any relation to the person I knew he’d been in his youth. But he was right. I may be older, more responsible and have more life experience, but I identify deeply with the Natasha of my teens and twenties. I still feel very younthful.

It’s a sort of curse, that you try to explain to your kids that you get it, you know what they’re going through. That they didn’t invent sex, or sneaking out of the house, or flimsy transparent excuses to cover up their bullshit. That you see right through them because you were there not long ago. And they scoff. Impossible. You could never understand.

Until they reach that age themselves. And find themselves telling their own kids the exact same things and receiving the exact same reactions. Then they know. And by then it’s too late. And the cycle continues.

I’m going to this festival this weekend and I’m kinda bummed that I’ll be selling all weekend. Cause there’s all these cool activities I’m gonna be missing. It’s an eco Festival and just about everyone in my little artsy tribe in Trinidad will be there. The guy who created the event is a friend of mine too. I’m so proud to see the work he’s done and how it’s grown. This year will be the third year and my second attending. I think next year if I can afford it, I’d like us to get passes to camp out and actually stay the whole weekend. Here’s hoping my jewelry sells well and all the hippies will go gaga over my resin nature jewelry. Cause the tables sure were expensive.

Some business opportunities you just have to pass up. I think people can be a little unrealistic at times. *sigh*

sun in the sky…

My AC guy came to do some repairs on my unit the other day. He told me at this time of the year, March, April, May, he has a lot of work to do to repair busted units.

I asked him why and he told me it’s the heat. The units are made to take that kind of sun and even one degree makes a huge difference.

I never really thought about it before. Trinidad is always hot. Or hotter. But it’s true that lately the weather has been scorching. I just never noticed that it gets hotter at THIS time of the year.

We’re in the dry season now but yesterday it rained all day. It was this really weird kind of rain too. The sun was bright but it kept falling all day like someone was holding a watering can over the island. Something about it made me uncomfortable.

This morning I was watching the wind kick up. I know Easter is kite flying season. And I was thinking about how when our ancestors lived closer to the land how they could read the weather patterns much more accurately. They could predict rain, they knew the behavior of the seasons better. We only know these things now because somebody tells us, not because we notice the changes. I’ve always had profound admiration for people who live close to nature and animals. There must be something to living in harmony with your environment. I am sure if we were more connected we could have more respect for the earth. But as it is, we “civilized” ourselves to the point where we’re killing our own habitat. Humans are such a contradictory species. Capable of so much good. And yet… look at us.

Just another reason to dump Facebook….

my-wanton-self:

Authorities in Britain and the United States are investigating the
alleged improper use of data harvested from over 50 million Facebook
users by Cambridge Analytica, a data mining consultancy, which played a
major role in the Leave campaign for Britain’s EU membership referendum, and which was massively influential in US President Donald
Trump’s 2016 campaign.
Facebook allowed developers to access the data [profiles, messages and crucially, their Friends lists] of people who hadn’t explicitly authorized it, an unprecedented invasion of privacy.

Basically, what happened was that Cambridge Analytica obtained the profiles of these millions of users through detailed personality tests offered to an initial smaller group, requiring the [paid] test particpants to sign in with their Facebook accounts. After harvesting the initial participants’ Facebook accounts to extract, amongst other information, their ‘Friends’ details, a massive database was then created. Cambridge Analytica used a sophisticated

algorithm

to gather sensitive personal information about sexual orientation, race, gender, even intelligence and childhood trauma

These individuals were then targeted with highly personalised
advertising based on their personality data,  aimed at, in Britain, swaying them towards the Leave vote in the Brexit referendum, and in US,  towards voting for Trump in the 2016 American elections. Oddly enough [oh, come onnn, who are we kidding?] Steve Bannon, who was then the head of Breitbart News, was deeply influential in the early formation
of Cambridge Analytica, and in fact, from June 2014 until August 2016, when he suddenly joined the Trump campaign, Bannon served as the vice president and secretary of Cambridge Analytica.

Data mining and targeted messaging is commonplace in modern political campaigning, but the exposure of Cambridge Analytica’s methodologies
has raised serious doubts around the ethics and privacy law
implications of the practices.

Facebook is now facing potential class action from investors who are dealing with a substantial share price slump. They’re alleging FB violated its own data privacy policies by allowing third
parties access to personal data of millions of Facebook users without
their consent, and when this was made public, share prices plunged, and the world’s largest social media company has lost $US60 billion of its stock market value.

I was photographing bracelets today and I took this one and decided not to use it because my wrist looked freakishly small. I have largish hands and small wrists and it does not make for an attractive combination. It’s all about the angles. This one was a no.

9,14,15,44 Please.

9: What are you really bad at?
Hmm… baseball. I don’t seem to have the right hand-eye coordination for it. The bat’s too round, the ball is too small… I dunno I can’t hit a ball to save my life.

14: What is your least favorite word?
I’m tempted to say the ever-popular moist, but it’s a good word under the right circumstances. Like if we’re talking about chocolate cake, for example, which is notoriously difficult to bake and retain its moisture. I have a few words that make me break out in hives, like religious, conservative, and republican. Born-again… ugh *shudder*

15: What is your favorite word?
Giggle. It’s makes me do just that. Such a happy word.

44: Are you good at hiding your feelings?
I tend to think I’m very transparent. I have a very expressive face and I’m a very emotional person. But I’m likely better at keeping my a poker face than I think. In fact I tend to do very well at card games where I have to bluff, for example. I’m probably just slightly paranoid about it. I do think I’m very bad at hiding my anger, but that seems to be the exception.

Thanks for the asks!

6, 25 and 27 please.

6: Your opinion about your body and how comfortable you are with it
I’m overweight and I’m not happy about it but I can’t seem to consistently do anything about it either. I’ve always liked my shape and still do but I’m not happy with my size. But I still feel attractive but I can’t quite accept the image of myself I see in the mirror, so I guess that’s where I’m at with that.

25: Would you date someone off the Internet?
Hm. I don’t know. I was signed up to dating sites when I was single but it was really just to see what was out there more than anything. I’m someone who really likes the organic approach. I don’t like dating. I’ve always preferred being friends first. So I don’t think internet dating would ever have appealed to me.

27: Have you ever wanted someone you couldn’t have?
Yeah, sure. I’ve had crushes on guys that either weren’t available at the time or weren’t interested enough. I’ve never had a serious case of unrequited love thankfully, more just cases where things just didn’t quite align. It sucks. You move on.

If there’s one thing that can clear up your skin it’s this stuff. I got a sample in a beauty box some years ago and tried it out. It’s not your typical mask, it’s very thin to the point where you don’t even see it on your skin so you can actually leave it on all day. I tend to break out when I’ve been in the sun. Two days of this and my skin was completely clear. It’s amazing to dry out pimples too, it will clear up the most stubborn zit in a couple of days. And it’s all natural so it’s actually very gentle. 1oz is about $50 so it’s not that cheap but a little goes a very long way.

THIS is the best post ever.

THIS.

can’t we just…?

I posted a pic of my dad on Facebook and I wanted to tag my siblings cause I don’t think they’ve ever seen it. Then I thought it would be nice to tag my half sister too. Then I thought maybe I shouldn’t cause they don’t talk. In the end I tagged nobody.

It seems that I’m the only one who had a positive experience on meeting her. My brother at this point is open to reopening a relationship with her. My sister is adamant she wants nothing to do with her.

I feel sometimes like I’m betraying them by having a relationship with her, although they’ve assured me it’s not the case. But loyalty is important to me. I always feel torn.

It helped a lot when my mom met her. They got along really well and I felt like I had someone on my side so to speak. But it still pains me that there’s this fracture. My half sister is much more pragmatic about it than I am and just accepts it as it is. I have middle child syndrome… I just want everybody to get along.

I’ve had this ring design in mind for the past two days and I figured I’d work on it next week.

Then my aunt came by and told me she wants me to make her a ring. Anything I wanted, she’s leaving it up to me.

So now I get to make the ring I and get paid for it. Yay!

Either I’m too light a sleeper or the birds are just way too loud. Every morning man.

At least it’s not that flock of wild parrots today. Jesus they could wake the dead.

I laughed at something (really stupid) for about ten minutes straight tonight. I tears were rolling down my face. My stomach hurt. I couldn’t breathe. And the thing was, I was alone so there was no incentive to stop. Honestly I think I just spent the best ten minutes of solitude I have ever had tonight.

Dyed my roots and deep conditioned my hair, gave myself a pedicure. I feel, as we say here, like people again.

I was really happy with the article that came out about me on Sunday. It was balanced and well written.

I remember many years ago in my first dealings with the press when I was interviewed for a tv show I was hosting, my father warned me of how often the press gets things wrong. He had to deal with them a lot with his job, but I mean he worked in politics so I think it’s a lot easier to fuck shit up there than in a personal profile. But I was still a little apprehensive about this interview.

I shouldn’t have worried. The reporter was a big fan of my work. She’s been following me on Instagram for sometime now. She’s particularly smitten by my resin pieces and we spoke in depth about the process of making resin jewelry so she could have a better understanding of it. She also took the photographs and was oohing and aahing over all the pieces. I think I’d like to send her something as a thank you. The title said it all: “Natasha Gill: Wearing Her Soul On The Outside.” I really loved that. She got me.

Grey

I was reading an article the other day about women and grey hair. Most of the women profiled had started going grey really young, in their teens and early twenties (like myself). Most of them were pretty young still and had gotten to the place where they had let it grow out and talked about how much they loved it

Only one woman echoed my sentiments. She said it didn’t fit her image of how she looked, to herself. I sit here as I have dye in my roots. I’m experiencing breakage from having to dye my hair so often because the roots grow in so fast.

On my hairstylist’s recommendation I’m taking a little more time between dye jobs and using alternative methods of temporary coverage (elf’s eyebrow gel kit does a really good job, I’m gonna have to start buying it by the case). Of course it comes out easily so when I’m at home my roots are visible. And today I couldn’t take that image of myself anymore with the silver hair. It looks like someone else in the mirror. I’ve tried growing it out but I can’t accept that version of myself.

I’ve gotten older, put on weight, lost some of my looks and sex appeal (in my opinion) and I can live with that. But I can’t live with that face with the silver roots. It’s too much to accept. I’m not sure if it’s a vanity thing or just a cognitive dissonance thing (or both). But it’s the one thing I’m not willing to give up. I just have to resolve to take better care of my hair. After I dye it of course.

Artist Matches Sound Waves With Their Counterparts In Nature

As the digital and physical worlds become increasingly intertwined, it can sometimes become difficult to distinguish the differences between the two. CGI is becoming scarily realistic, and 3D-printing allows a person with the right tools to literally pluck an object from the digital world and place it in the physical one. Art has consistently acted as a blurring point on the line between digital and physical, as evidenced by Ukrainian designer Anna Marinenko’s sound wave composites.

Marinenko, “observed the aesthetic similarity between the oscillating heights of mountains, trees and skylines and the waveforms of music,” according to DesignBoom, and thus set out to compose a comparison that would highlight the visions she saw in the trees, buildings, and mountains around her. The way she lines sound wavelengths up with the stellar photographs of a mountainous horizon or the wake of a motorboat makes the comparison seem so natural, the viewer feels ridiculous for not making the connection sooner.

Via Creators Project

Chris had to remind me that it’s Sunday today. My body clock thinks it’s Wednesday for some reason. I’m working long hours to prepare for some shows I have coming up, three in the next three weeks. I’m slightly stressed out but trying to finish everything now so I don’t have to rush later in the week. Things always take so much longer than you think. There comes a point where you have to decide you have enough stock and just have to stop making and start organizing.

I tend to make many more pieces than I can possibly sell because I’d rather not run out. I go to markets and see other vendors with a quarter the amount of stuff on their tables as I have and I wonder if that works better. I dunno I should try it one day.

“Most of the current discourse just assumes that the American situation is the only situation there is, which is to say a white majority with money and connections set against a black minority with artistic brilliance. Whereas most people in the world aren’t black or white, and have musical and other cultural traditions that simply don’t fit into the black-white binary.”

Is Bruno Mars a Cultural Thief? – New York Magazine – Medium

thechanelmuse:

“Ballet embraces the soft, ethereal and majestic side to women, and yet we often don’t see the media portray black women in this light. My project aims to reveal that women of color possess these qualities. We too are capable of portraying the princess, fairy and swan.”

 —Aesha Ash

Aesha Ash’s prestigious career has included world class roles. Yet she’s now on to a different mission, with three big goals. She wishes to see ballet become more diverse. She hopes to inspire youth from rough areas to pursue their dreams. And she wants to show the world that tough environments can’t hold back talented people, especially those with ambition.

Aesha performed professionally for 13 years. She attended the legendary School of American Ballet; joined the New York City Ballet at age 18; and has danced solo and principal roles for companies like the Béjart Ballet in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Alonzo King Lines Ballet in San Francisco. Now she’s focused on The Swan Dreams Project, in which she uses imagery to tackle stereotypes placed on black women. Aesha commissions photographers to snap her as a ballerina in her hometown of rugged Rochester, New York, and in Richmond, California, and then donates proceeds from photo sales to organizations helping advance inner city youth. She also donates images to organizations for their fundraisers and to people seeking more positive imagery for their children or groups.

The dancer points out that black women have always existed in ballet, yet few become principals, the highest tier of dancers. When Misty Copeland became the first black female principal with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre last summer, Aesha found the milestone a moment to celebrate, yet sad and troubling that in 2016, we’re still celebrating a first. She hopes The Swan Dreams project will give more dancers — and youths in general — the chance to be celebrated for their own talents.

Rochester has one of America’s highest crime rates. But Aesha hits the streets to prove that her hometown is more than violence and gangs. That’s where her Swan Dreams Project comes in. “My community saw that out of our environment came a ballerina, not just negativity — a little black girl from inner city Rochester actually went on to become a professional ballet dancer in a top-tiered company,” Aesha said in a one-on-one interview for this report. “Youth followed me on the street saying, ‘This is what we need. This lifts us up.’”

The first sin. Misconception is that Eve was the first to sin when that’s not really all that true.

You see
When God created everything and then Adam. He told him about the tree he said don’t eat of it.

God never told Eve.

When Eve was in the garden being tempted read that section you’ll find something interesting. Adam was right next to her and he didn’t say anything. He was using Eve as a Guinea pig.

Eve bit into the fruit nothing changed she handed it to Adam. And when he bit into it their eyes were opened.

So really the first sin was Man’s passive nature allowing something to happen he was told not to allow happen if he never ate their eyes may never have been opened but who knows.

So I was taught a lesson in how to get rid of a migraine in 30 seconds and omfg listen my migraines don’t go away ever but I was shown what part of my body to touch and like???????????????

It’s witchcraft????????? Like I would be burned at the stake if I lived in ye olde days knowing that information?????

What the fuck??????

Spill it! Lol….Hooooowwwww?? Had migraines since age 9….😓😓😓

Its called the T4 push, but I literally can’t find the info online????? I guess I’m not searching good enough? These medical fuckers are holdin out on us lol.

It’s best to have someone do this for you while you stand up and relax your muscles as best you can, but if you’re alone, a tennis ball and a flat surface will probably work. Alternatively you can lie on the edge of a bed at the pressure point. (But no really do try to find someone to do it for you)

Find the area in your spine between either the first, second, third, or fourth vertebrae. It should be sore and uncomfortable to press down on, so look for the one that’s most painful, and press down with as much pressure as you can on that area for 30 seconds.

Realize that 80% of your pain has magically disappeared and keep the info secret if you live in a small puritan town, lest you be tried for witchcraft.

If you don’t have to worry about being burned or hanged, then share the info with your migraine suffering friends.

As someone who wrote a 10k word paper on pressure points for a high belt ranking test in her martial arts class, I can tell you that you just found a pressure point used in acupressure and acupuncture to relieve pain, particularly that in the head. 🙂

Hand to god we discovered this by accident when my husband was rubbing my neck and I nearly collapsed it felt so good

This post was sent by literal angels??? I’ve had a persistent low-level headache for nearly 24hrs and now it’s gone??? In 30 seconds? What gods did you sacrifice to for this information!?!?

As a medical massage therapist, I thought I would give my two cents.

This is good for tension migranes and normal migraines, but actually pretty useless for sinus migraines. It’ll help for a hot second, but quickly come back. (These are usually the migraines behind your eyes, in your ears, and behind your forehead. Sometimes it can feel like jaw pain or TMJ) for sinus migraines, behind the ear in a divot. Press down firmly and pull towards your collarbone. That’ll drain your sinuses. Also, pressing around the eye socket on the cheekbones help. There is also a little triangle up away from the eye in the eyebrow bone. Press and hold pretty hard and that’ll relieve that behind the forehead pain. Also, ear pulling is great to help move sinuses around.

Don’t forget the temples too! Press firmly and hold. Open and close your jaw while holding your temples. It’ll feel weird, but it’ll help with jaw pain. It’ll work a similar way if you hold the jaw joint under your cheekbone.

And never underestimate the power of a foot massage!! Give minutes can be all the difference!! Our feet are our base. If they hurt even a little, somewhere else in your body will hurt. Treat your feet and sinuses kindly!

As a lifelong sufferer from frequent migraines I will reblog this everytime I see it, for myself and my fellow sufferers!!
