your fave is problematic

The truth is that a lot of my faves are problematic. But if I wrote off everything that wasn’t perfect I’d have nothing left to like. It feels like the climate is of people just waiting to pounce  on someone the minute they do or say something thoughtless/politically incorrect/sexist/racist/prejudiced/add to the list. Calling out people on their shit is sometimes necessary. Education and awareness are important. But it’s ok if you love a book/singer/actor/movie/band/add to the list that isn’t perfect. It’s ok to love something and have a problem with it. It’s ok to hold two feelings that conflict. It’s ok. Really. Love your shit. Just be aware.

Oooh I just remembered Mr. Robot series finale will air tonight. Yay! Plus we’re having steak for dinner. Double yay!

I changed the gas tank all by myself.

The stove is working, the baked potatoes are baking, and more importantly, I didn’t blow up the house.

I spent my workday watching RuPaul’s Drag Race. Way better than the stuffy British miniseries I was trying to watch.

There’s a local artist that I used to follow here on tumblr. Occasionally I would comment on their stuff. This was before they hit it big and when it felt we were part of the small Trini tumblr community. I saw them out one day and came up and introduced myself. Their reaction to me was a welcoming as if I’d been a cockroach.

I found myself in a social situation with them again one day, this time with a group of people who I had gone on an excursion with. They were incredibly anti social and spoke to no one. My distaste for them grew, and so at this point I have a very strong negative reaction whenever I see their work or hear their name.

If you are an artist of some type, you have to remember that you are your own brand ambassador. The public are your customers, and whether you like it or not, you have to always put your best food forward when dealing with them.

Selling your work means selling yourself. You have to be pleasant to people. Yes it requires effort. Especially when you just want to be left alone. But that’s the price you pay for getting to do this for a living. These people buy your stuff. And you should never think you are so important that you don’t have to be grateful to your customers.

The antisocial reclusive artist trope is tired and played out.

Today is my baby sister’s birthday. I can’t believe she’s 33. It feels like it was just the other day when we found out our mom was pregnant. I was almost ten when she was born. She’s my darling. And her daughter is my other darling. I love them both with all my heart.

My sister was telling me that she had to take my niece to the doctor to do some tests and she had to get blood drawn. She wasn’t sure how my niece would handle it (she’s 5) so she was a little anxious.

They changed my niece into a kiddie hospital gown and she handled it like a trooper. Until my sis saw a little quiver of her lip, and a tear roll down her cheek. Concerned, she asked her what was wrong.

My niece let out a sob and then lifted the corner of the hospital gown. “This doesn’t go with my outfit,” she wailed. “I want to change!” My sister nodded and got her back in her clothes immediately. I cracked up when she told me. She really is my daughter’s child.

I spent the better part of my afternoon working in these earrings. I only made them to accompany these three pendants that I made today. I hade the raw pieces just lying around on my bench so I figured I might as well finish them for UpMarket. The pendants went by quickly. The earrings not so much. And I just noticed that one of the turquoise spikes is longer than the others. Argh! I think I’m done for today. I’ll finish them tomorrow. It’s been a long day but at least I feel prepared for Saturday. Unlike last month which was a frenzied rush. I have a delivery tomorrow and some other stuff to finish off but I think for the most part everything I wanted to make this week is done.

I’m gonna get on dinner. Oh wait we ran out of gas for the stove. I guess I’m going to have to learn how to change the gas tank myself today.

Every single time Nicki Minaj wears a West Indian feathered headdress, and I mean EVERY TIME, she is accused of cultural appropriation.

This shit is exhausting. Other cultures have feathers. Other cultures wear them in their hair. Stop reacting and maybe investigate, educate yourself.

She’s not gonna stop wearing them. Because it’s West Indian. She’s West Indian. Look that shit up. WEST INDIAN.

im so weary of dudes who the only photos of women they reblog are sexualized photos

like its 100% ok to be sexually aroused by women of course

but do you appreciate women outside of sexualized contexts? are there any women you admire intellectually/artistically? do you have any women as strictly platonic friends and have no intention of ever becoming sexual with?

do you enjoy the platonic company of any women because theyre just funny & interesting people to be around?

are you aware that you can enjoy a woman’s presence/personality without wanting to have sex with her? do you think relationships with women can only be sexual?

basically, do you see women as people?

Whatever happened to the iceberg that sank the titanic? Is it still around? Does it have a name? How come we never heard about it again? It’s famous

OG

There’s a jewelry collective I follow on tumblr and Instagram. They have a very distinctive and unique style that I love. I forget the name of the brand right now but I’ve reblogged their work before.

The other day they posted a picture of a necklace from Anthropologie that looked like a poor imitation of one of their pieces and they basically said as much, which their followers were quick to defend.

The thing is that I’ve made pieces in a similar style to theirs. Pieces that were inspired by a completely different style that looks nothing like my finished product. Or theirs. And I wanted to say something but I decided against it.

There’s a difference between inspiration and copying. I’ve always looked at other artists’ work for inspiration. When I paint, when I did graphic design and now as a jeweler. I do it almost every day. It gets the creative juices flowing for me and I use it as a jump off point to create my own pieces. But I never (at least consciously) copy.

However it is inevitable that you will see more than one person creating the exact same thing. Maybe some of it is ripped off. But I truly believe that a lot of times creativity pulls from the same place: The collective unconscious.

When I worked as a designer I could feel a “pulse” for lack of a better term for certain trends. And I could sometimes feel what was going to blow up next in terms of style. And I always knew what was in the way out.

I don’t know if jewelry is similar because I haven’t felt that pulse in this field. And maybe it’s because the trends really don’t change in the same way. Not as fast, not as extreme. Other than art jewelry, there’s not that much reinventing in this field. There’s only so many ways you can make a ring, after all.

For me, I’m less concerned with being trendy and more interested in finding my own style. I don’t expect to reinvent jewelry. I just want my pieces to look like they were all made by me.

That said if, I see a piece of mine replicated, I think I’d probably be more flattered than insulted. At least at first. As far as I know, no one in Trinidad is making pieces like mine. And I hope it stays that way.

The jewelry collective ended up taking down the picture in the end. I think it was a good move. It didn’t reflect positively in their brand. Plus honestly, their style is very derivative of Native American beadwork so I don’t think they can claim ownership. And that’s just the thing with doing anything creative. Something is always inspired by something else. Rarely is anything ever really new. Which is why I tend to feel a little defensive when someone claims their work’s been copied. Because unless you’ve lived in a cave all your life, it’s kind of difficult to claim that you’re an original.

Is cookie dough like a legitimate thing to eat before you take antibiotics? Like can that be my meal? Cause I am really over food right now.

Working on some midi rings. I could really do with a manicure but it’s pretty pointless given what I do with my hands every day. Still it doesn’t stop me from adorning my fingers 🙂 #jewelry #artisanjewelry #handmade #sundarajewelry #ring #midi

sweet I already got an order for those snake/serpentine rings I posted today!

I made a few to take to UpMarket on Saturday. they look really gorgeous in person. I have a feeling once people pick them up they won’t want to put them back down again.

heh-heh

It took me hour and half to eat 8 ounces of mac and cheese last week pretty much all week. I understand. Hope you heal soon!

Thank you! Gosh I hear you this is such a nuisance. I have at least another week of this eating on one side of my mouth thing. I go back to the dentist in about ten days to remove what’s left of the stitches and take an X-ray and see how well the graft took. I’m usually very cavalier about this sort of thing but I have to be more careful this time to make sure the bone graft takes properly. Le sigh.

Oh my fucking god I am so tired of how long it takes to eat! This is really exhausting. I feel like I’ve been working on this Chinese food since last year. Argh

It’s 5:30. The days flies by so quickly when I’m working. It always feels like just an hour or two have passed. And I always have so many things I want to get done and things always take so much longer than I expect.

Then again I made a bunch of pieces that I didn’t intend to make today. That happens pretty often too. I still want to make some midi rings.

We have elections coming up, what is it, this week? And they’re campaigning in our neighbourhood. Apparently this is a heavily contested area. It’s so annoying. I’m not registered to vote here I’ll be voting in my home constituency. And I know how that’s going to go. But I still think it’s my civic duty to vote. I almost didn’t. But I kind of have to. Plus who is going to get this government out of office? Jesus they’re such a hot mess.

I should eat something. And drink something. I’m thirsty.

Yeah… how’s your day going?

Ask me #4 !

OOOO ASK ME

I was googling my name tonight out of boredom and this image came up. It had apparently been pinned from a tumblr called planetrum.

Years ago when I was working in advertising, Angostura was thinking of redesigning their bottles so a few of us came up with some prototype designs and this was one of mine.

It’s not a bad rendering although I can see where I’d make some changes. Photoshop used to be my jam.

Angostura never chose any of our designs as they decided new bottles would be too expensive. They streamlined their brand with an existing bottle shape and redesigned all their labels instead. I worked on that too but… That’s another story.

Anyway how random to find this image. They took it off my portfolio. I wonder what else is floating around out there?

I’m hungry. I’ve been eating really small portions because eating on one side of my mouth is tedious.

I don’t know what to eat. It’s midnight. I want cream of wheat but I suspect that’s not really something you should eat right before you go to bed. I think it’ll rest on my hips.

Maybe I’ll try an apple. If it’s not too much work. Steups. I’m bored.

My gum is hurting me today. Not bad. But enough for me to notice it. I don’t know why. I guess I’m gonna take one of those painkillers they gave me. This is slightly irritating.

I have a new gold pinky ring! Basically, I was working on an order and I made the ring too small. I didn’t feel like doing all the work it would take to stretch it so i just made another one. This one fit nicely on my pinky finger so it’s mine now! The other two, a copper and silver ring, we’re just laying on my bench. I have no idea when I made them and how long they’ve been sitting there but I’m thinking a while. I have jewelry laying all over that studio that disappears and reappears all the time. I should add that I never wear jewelry at home but these slim bands didn’t get in the way. #jewelrytales

I was in the living room last night and I glanced at one of the aquariums and it looked really crowded. So I went into the bedroom and asked Chris if he bought more fish. And he looked really confused for a second. So I started doubting myself, wondering if we had had 8 fish in there all along and I was just really that unobservant. But then he was like, Oh yeah! I did. Apparently he thought I was talking about salmon. From the supermarket.

I finished watching The Wonder Years today. It was sad. I mean it was a good series just the ending was kind of sad. I had never seen even one episode of the series when it was on. It made me a little nostalgic for my own childhood but it was a little too saccharine sometimes. But I guess it was meant to be.

I keep finding myself wishing I could watch Gilmore Girls over again for the first time. I loved that series. The Vicar of Dibley was really great too. Saving Grace was phenomenal. I enjoyed Parenthood too.

So I need a new series to watch. Preferably light, comedic, female-centric. Any suggestions?

peppermintmonster:

Friendly reminder to all working artists or (especially) aspiring artists.

If a client says they can’t afford to pay you but you’ll get good exposure, one of two things is happening:

1. They are lying. They can afford to pay you, but they are choosing not to. They will pay the printer to print the books, they will pay the mail service to deliver them, and you’d better believe they’re going to pay themselves for sending you an email explaining that they can’t afford to pay you. They think you are a sucker, and if you take the job you’ll be telling them they are right.

2. They are not lying. They have zero budget, no audience and no real distribution system. They’ll still be paying the printer and mail service because people who work in those professions don’t work for free just because someone promises them a recommendation. But they aren’t paying themselves, they’re running on an incredibly small margin, and there’s a good chance they won’t exist as a corporate entity in a few years. Publishing your work with them will give you less exposure than putting it on tumblr or Instagram for free would. It will never lead to a paying job.

If a client starts ranting about the “short-sightedness” of artists, or otherwise complains about artists in general in their opening offer to you, run. Run as fast as you would run if a blind date spent the whole of dinner ranting about how horrible your entire gender is. Yes, there are doubtlessly clients who’ve been screwed over by artists in the past, but the ones who complain about artists in general will not respect you, they will not treat you well.

Working for free does not prove that you are passionate about something. It proves that you do not need to be paid for your work. How many doctors went into medicine because they are passionate about saving lives? Do you think any of them are asked to perform heart surgery for free?

No one will ever pay $50 for something if they can get something similar for $5. When you charge next to nothing for art that you’ve worked for hours on, art that required years of training to create, you are telling your client that it is worth next to nothing. They will remember that the next time they want to hire an artist.

People who are looking to exploit artists know that artists are hard on themselves. They know that most artists don’t think their work is good enough to charge top dollar. They know that artists have been told from the first day they started taking their art seriously as a career that they’ll never make any money off it, that it’s not a real job, that it has no value to society. They know how to push artists’ insecurities about their profession in order to convince them that that demanding fair compensation is unrealistic and uncooperative.

If you’re just desperate for a job in the arts, any job in the arts, give yourself a job. Start a webcomic, or give yourself illustration assignments that you post on social media regularly, create work for a gallery show even if you don’t have one yet, or make a book. Give yourself a job. If you’re going to work for free, you may as well be working for yourself, setting your own hours and following your own interests. Having original art with original characters and ideas in your portfolio, and making sure your art is visible online will get the attention of publishers who are actually looking to hire people for good jobs. Drawing a shitty comic for a defunct publisher based on someone else’s shitty ideas will not.

Protect yourself, because no one else will. Protect yourself, because no one else will. There are people lining up around the block to exploit you. Protect yourself because no one else will.

I made some septum jewelry for a client today. It is really really tiny (7mm interior diameter, I couldn’t get it to 6 as they’d asked) and so now apparently I make piercing jewelry. I like the one with the beaded embellishments. I’m wondering if I could make one for a non pierced nose. I’d totally wear it

Chris and I were going to take a drive today to somewhere far but we woke up really late this morning so we’re staying in today (Independence Day holiday). Which is great cause I get to stay in and work in the studio. I have an order to deliver for tomorrow plus I want to stock up for UpMarket. I’m feeling super inspired so I happy to stay home.

everydayjewels replied to your post:Dreads

Agreed. I see it around Vancouver a fair bit because the white folks here often fancy themselves as crunchy/boho types, and I swear sometimes I half expect bugs to come crawling out of their hair. UGH.

To be fair, there are Black people who don’t maintain their dreads properly either. I have seen some downright disgusting shit on Black people’s heads. But for straight hair to dread you need to add something to the hair to get it to stick together (often beeswax) and it needs to be washed and oiled and re-knit together to keep it neat. It can be done. I know people with straight hair that have very neat dreads. I had a friend who was Chinese who had gorgeous dreads. But they require work. And lots of times White people have no knowledge of how to care for them. So they basically hold their dreads together with dirt. It’s disgusting. Dreads smell when they’re not washed properly.

dreamybrowngirl:

Okay we can all have a good laugh and cheer at what went down tonight but in all seriousness what she was doing was calling out a white woman on her horribly patronizing, racist behavior. A white woman tried to silence and belittle a Black woman’s pain because she didn’t like how it was presented and proceeded to dismiss it because she was too angry. Miley condescended to her, telling a black woman how best to deal with something that she as a white woman will never have to deal with. And Nicki clapped back. On national television. In front of a live audience, in front of the world, on air.

If you think the media and its industries aren’t going to punish her for it then I need you to pay real close attention to her the next coming months, because you can bet she won’t have as many appearances or invitations, you can bet she will get even less recognition and even more criticism, you can bet most mentions of her will associate her with the Angry Black Woman stereotype without ever addressing why she was angry or recognizing that her anger was justified. They are going to make Nicki out to be the ultimate bad guy when the reality is she was defending herself-and by proxy, Black women in entertainer everywhere-against some serious displays of ignorance and racism. But you watch. Watch what’s going to happen to Nicki after this.

The clap back was hilarious, yes, but there is a reason Black people are celebrating it; because Nicki showed some serious courage. Black people, Black women especially, are expected to shoulder any and all abuse silently. She refused. At the end of the day, to these people, she is just a Black woman who is supposed to shut up and take whatever bullshit gets thrown at her. She isn’t supposed to defend herself, especially not if it means hurting white women’s feelings. Protect Nicki Minaj at all fucking costs. Support her at all costs, because she’s going to come under serious fire.

nahh-fam:

So when the media portrays Miley as hyper sexualized but accepts males doing the same thing, Miley can recognize sexism. She can talk about it and complain about it and demand that we accept her owning her sexuality. But when Nicki does the same thing with her sexuality and is passed over as a black woman, Miley thinks Nicki shouldn’t make it “all about her” and “take it too personally”.

Miley wants to talk about sexism but thinks Nicki shouldn’t talk about racism.

Miley wants to own her sexuality but doesn’t think Nicki was right to call out her snub for the Anaconda video in which Nicki owned her sexuality.

Miley says “she knows whats going on” and has “Seen the statistics” but still wants to silence Nicki Minaj.

White feminism has never had a hero so ignorant.

cheetofetus:

I feel like this is a great example of racism in the media. Both of these are reporting on the same event, but TMZ portrays Nicki as the “angry black woman”. First the choose the picture that makes Nicki look like she’s attacking, while Buzzfeed used a picture taken seconds before but portrays Nicki as much less aggressive. Then TMZ goes on to use buzzwords like “explodes” and then includes “You Bitch” in the headline, all to make Miley seem like the victim and to demonize Nicki. It’s the little things like this that change the story and leaves Nicki as the villain and lets Miley escape scandal unscathed. The same thing happened with Nicki and Taylor’s made-up “feud”.

Dreads

The reason I don’t like white people wearing dreads is not cultural appropriation. Black people are not the only people in history to have worn dreadlocks. I don’t think we get to own dreads. The reason is that most white people who wear dreads leave their hair looking like shit. Black hair dreads naturally, but it is a VERY high maintenance hairstyle that requires constant grooming to look neat. When most white people wear dreads they don’t take care of it and it looks disgusting. Matted dirty hair is not dreadlocks. That is just nastiness. Your hair was not made for this so please stop wearing it. Plus we get shit for wearing dreads (”unprofessional”) but you get to be bohemian and free spirited? Nah.
